HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES to Linda Mahony on the recent sad and unexpected passing of Doug Mahony. Yandina Community Gardens pays special tribute to Doug who was involved in the garden for many years. He was a pillar of the Permaculture community for many years. He took on the role as President for 2.5 years and was always a friendly face assisting the management committee and volunteers of the garden. He assisted in other not always visible ways. Keeping membership lists up to date as well as collating the e-Newsletter and supporting the efficient changeover at the AGM. He will be missed. We send our special love to Linda at this time. Rest in Peace. Gone too soon.
There will be a private cremation ceremony.

Keeping the 'Person' in Funeral Notices

Writing a funeral notice for a loved one is a significant act of storytelling. It is a chance to share their identity with the community one last time.

As a gentle reminder, when you are crafting these notices, try to keep the focus entirely person-centred:

• Focus on the individual: Prioritise their name, who they were to the community, and the key details of the service so others can celebrate their life.

• Maintain privacy: Be sure to protect personal contact details in the public notice to keep your family’s information secure.

• Your space, your story: You do not need to use this space to promote a funeral business; they handle their own marketing. This moment is about the person you are honouring.

When we focus on the person rather than the transaction, we create a more meaningful space for remembrance.

A well-written notice allows the person's legacy to shine through clearly.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Kay Saunders AO, a distinguished Queensland historian and Emeritus Professor at the University of Queensland. A leading scholar of Australian history, her work explored race, gender, and colonial society, and she authored extensively on Queensland’s past.

Professor Saunders was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1999 and advanced to Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2021 Australia Day Honours, for "distinguished service to tertiary education, particularly to history, as an academic and author, to professional associations, and to the community".

Over the course of her career, she served on numerous committees and boards, and received many honours, including the National Museum of Australia Medal (2003), the Royal Queensland Historical Society’s John Kerr Medal (2006), and the John Oxley Library Medal (2010).

She was commissioned to write "Between the covers: revealing the State Library of Queensland’s collections" (2006), showcasing highlights from State Library’s rich historical collections. The publication is available to view via our One Search catalogue.

In 2025, Professor Saunders delivered a John Oxley Library Medal alumni address at the State Library Fellowships and Medals event, reflecting on her experiences as a researcher through to her work on "Between the covers".

Vale Ron West

Tributes are flowing for Ron West, who has died, aged 93.

An incredible organ player and contributor to the arts, Mr West kept silent films alive at the Majestic Theatre Pomona for almost 40 years.

'The world, and more specifically the arts world, is a better place for having had Ron West in it," Alison Hadfield the president of the Majestic Theatre Pomona wrote in a social media post.

"I’m sure that he is swinging on a star far away right now arranging a silent film screening and chatting to anyone who will listen to him about the progression of film."

Ron West only retired two years ago.

The Nambour Cinema is holding a special screening of "The Last Man Standing", a documentary on Ron West's life, along with a lineup of locally made films tomorrow night, Tuesday, at 7 o'clock.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Stephanie Haslam, a foundational figure in our botanical community.

We would like to share this tribute by local botanist Vanessa Moscato, sent to Stephanie a few days ago,

"I felt a need to write to you after the botany group message advising us that you had elected to go into palliative care.

I wanted to let you know that your legacy is strong, this shire owes you both a great deal; from my first encounters with you at Thomas Street, through seagrass watch, mangrove watch, Noosa river rangers and the bushland care program.

My regular interaction with your Noosa Native Plants book as an enthusiastic young botanist and my ongoing regular use of your website and local plant lists.

Then all your enduring NICA projects, all your textile masterpieces, workshops and exhibits that over time transformed many public spaces.

For all you have done for community, environment, and navigating the politics & economics of those two important but unlucrative missions.

For being a relentless mover and shaker. A s**t stirrer. A selfless advocate for quality and integrity. A mentor, guide and strong female role model for us to follow and for being a local botanist extraordinaire

Thank you Stephanie"
