Next week, 21–27 September, is Dementia Action Week
Much of the care our Angels provide is for people living with dementia and Alzheimers disease in their own home, or in hospital. One thing we know is that no two people, and no two homes are ever the same. 😇
For one person, a good day might mean going out for a coffee. For another, it might be listening to familiar music, folding the washing together, walking in the garden or just having someone nearby.
Our care is never about taking over or deciding what somebody should do. It is about patience, getting to know the person, understanding what matters to them and supporting them to live each day in the way that feels right for them. We've found talking openly about dementia helps families feel less alone, and gives them a chance to share what is changing, what they are finding difficult and what is still bringing happiness and connection.
Often it is the simplest things that make the greatest difference: speaking calmly, listening patiently, allowing time for a response and not correcting someone when their experience of the moment is different from ours.
We believe dementia and alzheimer's disease may change many things, but it does not change a person’s need to feel heard, respected, safe and loved. 🩵
