We get this question all the time, and the answer is a resounding yes.

Many families are surprised to learn that staying at home with professional care is not only possible, it's often the preferred choice for older Australians and people living with disability.

In-home care can cover everything from help with daily tasks and personal care to nursing visits, allied health, and specialist support such as dementia care.

The best part? It's built around your life, your routine, and your goals.

At HomeCaring, our local care teams work with you and your family to create a care plan that fits, so your loved one can stay where they're happiest: home.

Not sure where to start with in-home aged care? You're not alone.

In-home aged care is all about helping older Australians stay safe, comfortable and independent, right in the place they love most: home.

Here's what it can include:
- Personal care (showering, grooming, getting dressed)
- Help around the house (cleaning, laundry, meal prep)
- Allied health services (physio, podiatry, occupational therapy)
- Nursing care (wound care, medications, health monitoring)
- Transport to appointments and activities
- Specialist support for dementia and complex health needs

The best part? It's all tailored to you, your routine, your needs, your life.

Whether you're exploring care for the first time or reassessing your current options, our friendly local care teams are here to help you feel confident and supported every step of the way.

You're approved: here's what happens next (and how HomeCaring Sutherland can help while you wait)

The approval letter from My Aged Care formally acknowledges the steps you and your family are taking to secure care. Despite the initial relief, there is typically a waiting period between approval and the release of Support at Home funding.

Many families find themselves in this position, often waiting for months for care.

At HomeCaring, while we cannot expedite the approval process, we want you to know that you do not have to navigate this waiting period alone.

During this time, we are here to support you by:

- Keeping you informed about any changes to the system.
- Answering your questions as they arise.
- Helping you prepare so that, once your funding is assigned, your care can begin without any delays.

We will stay in touch, sharing tips for managing the waiting period.

What is the real secret to ageing well?

A recent study of 720 Australians has revealed something powerful: while 70% of us will manage health conditions as we age, the key to feeling well isn't just physical health. It's about purpose and connection.

The research found that Australians who thrive most in their later years share three key things:

- Feeling in control of daily choices and maintaining personal independence.
- Having a clear reason to get up and engage with the world.
- Staying socially connected and avoiding the risks of isolation.

It’s a great reminder that health is about more than a diagnosis - it’s about the quality of life we live and the connections we maintain.

Your care, your rules.

Every care journey begins with a Service Agreement. It's an important document that formalises our commitment and puts you in the driver’s seat.

This agreement is our promise to you. It guarantees your right to:

- Choice & control: You decide which services you receive and who enters your home.
- Clear pricing: No hidden fees - just a straightforward breakdown of costs and how your funding is used.
- Privacy & dignity: How we protect your personal information and ensure your comfort.
- Feedback & flexibility: A clear process for making changes to your care or sharing your thoughts with us.

We take the time to walk through every page with you, ensuring you feel confident and supported before we even begin. When you know your rights, you can focus on what really matters: living well at home.

If you have any questions about how it works, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Choosing your care provider: What to look for and the right questions to ask.

As you and your family move closer to having your Support at Home funding assigned, an important milestone is approaching: choosing a care partner you’ll trust in your home.

Whether you’re seeking care for yourself or organising it for a loved one, finding the right fit is essential.

Many families begin speaking with care providers during the waiting period, so they feel confident in their choice when funding is assigned.

Here are four questions families ask when comparing providers:

1. Who will be coming into the home?
Ask if support will be provided by a dedicated, small team. This ensures everyone involved has the peace of mind that comes with seeing a friendly, familiar face at every visit.

2. How much of the budget goes towards actual care?
Ask for a clear breakdown of service costs and management fees so you know whether your funding will be maximised for hands-on services or administrative support.

3. How flexible is the schedule?
Support should wrap around your life, not the other way around. Ask how easy it is to adjust the timing of visits if family events, appointments, or other plans come up.

4. What happens if needs change?
Health and support needs can evolve. It’s helpful to understand how quickly a care provider can adjust services up or down, and whether they can help you navigate a Support Plan Review if needed.

Beyond these questions, pay attention to how a care provider makes you and your family feel. Do they take the time to listen? Do they show genuine interest in your family's preferences?

Choosing a care provider is about more than just checking boxes - it’s about finding a care partner who respects independence, understands the emotional realities of caring for a loved one, and whom you will be comfortable welcoming into your home.

If you’d like to talk through your options or ask questions as you explore providers, the HomeCaring Sutherland team is always happy to help.

Support during the wait: Help is available for families and care recipients.

Supporting someone you love can be deeply meaningful, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding, especially during periods of uncertainty while waiting for funding.

Did you know there is a national service designed specifically to support carers like you?

Carer Gateway provides free services and resources for people who care for a family member or loved one.

Some of the Carer Gateway support services families find helpful include:

- Counselling: professional support to talk through the emotional side of caring.
- Respite support: help arranging short breaks when you need time to rest.
- Peer support: connecting with other families in a similar situation.
- Practical coaching and resources: tools to help you manage the practicalities of care.

While every family’s situation is different, access to additional support can make the waiting period much more manageable.
