UNSW Psychiatry Society

UNSW Psychiatry Society is a SIG (Significant Interest Group) affiliated with the UNSW Medical Students Society (MedSoc) at the University of New South Wales.

We are affiliated with UNSW's Medical Society and work to host and promote Psychiatry content and events in relation to Mental Health and Wellbeing

UNSW Mental Health: https://www.unsw.edu.au/student/support/health-wellbeing/mental-health We aim to promote, facilitate and consolidate learning within the spectrum of psychiatric medicine for UNSW medical students. Throughout the year, we will be ho

lding several psychiatric-based clinical skills sessions, specialty pathway information sessions and also explore the application of psychiatry in future medical practice! To a lesser extent, we will also be working with MedSoc to destigmatise mental illness and create a general medical student understanding of maintaining good mental health hygiene. ✨SPEAKER TALK REVEAL ✨

We are thrilled to announce our fourth and FINAL talk speaker for our 2026 PsychiSoc Conference: Dr Megan Kalucy 🧠

About our Speaker:
Dr Kalucy is a psychiatrist and academic with over 25 years of experience in Australian public health, specialising in youth mental health, psychosis, sleep and the physical health of people living with severe mental illness. She is Director of Teaching at the UNSW School of Clinical Medicine and leads the UNSW psychiatry teaching program.

Passionate about medical education, she works nationally and internationally to improve mental health education and practice. She also continues clinical work with the NSW Mental Health Review Tribunal and contributes as a writer and examiner for the Australian Medical Council.

Her talk will be about making a life within psychiatry and opening doors and seeds of change!

About our Speaker:
Dr Jack Scrader is a final-year Consultant Liaison Psychiatry Advanced Trainee from South Eastern Sydney Local Health District. He has a previous background in molecular biology and a current interest in su***de research.
His talk will be all about the world of Consultant Liaison Psychiatry (CL Psychiatry), a world of collaboration, connection and communication. 🗣️

We are thrilled to announce our second talk speaker for our 2026 PsychiSoc Conference: Professor Valsamma Eapen AO 🧠

About our speaker: 🗣️
Professor Valsamma Eapen is Chair of Child Psychiatry at UNSW Sydney, Head of the Academic Unit of Child Psychiatry Services and Director of the BestSTART Child Health Research Unit.

She is also a 2026 Order of Australia recipient and an internationally recognised expert in neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly autism and Tourette Syndrome.

She has authored over 500 publications and contributed to national guidelines for autism, ADHD and Tourette Syndrome. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and an NHMRC Senior Research Leadership Fellow.

Her speaker talk will be about the impacts of Australia’s 🇦🇺world first social media ban 📲 for under 16s on child and adolescent mental health! 🧠

We are thrilled to announce our second workshop facilitator and our first talk speaker for our 2026 PsychiSoc Conference: Dr Ashna Basu 🧠

About our speaker: 🗣️

Dr Ashna Basu is a Psychiatry Advanced Trainee in New South Wales with a strong interest in leadership, governance, and advocacy. She has held numerous leadership roles across medical and professional organisations and is a Graduate of the the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Her advocacy work has been recognised nationally and internationally, including speaking at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in 2024 and receiving the 2024 NSW/ACT Young Achievers’ Award for Achievement in Health. 🏆

If you’ve ever considered psychiatry but aren’t too sure about what it entails, this is the talk for YOU! 🫵 Her speaker talk will be about her experiences in psychiatry training, the exciting and challenging aspects and her motivations for choosing this specialty. 🧠

We are thrilled to announce our first workshop speaker and facilitator for our 2026 PsychiSoc Conference: Professor Matthew Large

About our speaker: 🗣️
Professor Matthew Large is a Conjoint Professor of Psychiatry at UNSW and Medical Superintendent of Mental Health at Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney.

He is an internationally recognised researcher with expertise in su***de, homicide, substance use, and mental health risk assessment, and regularly contributes to coronial investigations and mental health service reviews across Australia.

His workshop will be an interactive group discussion on how to talk to patients about their cannabis use and ways of approaching these conversations.
