๐ชท Why are Hindu funerals often held within 24โ48 hours?
Itโs something Iโm asked surprisingly often.
For many Hindu families, holding the funeral soon after death isnโt simply about wanting to โget things organised quicklyโ. There is a much deeper spiritual significance behind it.
In Hindu belief, the physical body is temporary, while the Atman โ the soul โ continues its journey.
The rituals surrounding death, known as Antim Sanskar (the final rites), are intended to honour the deceased, support the soulโs onward journey and allow the family to begin the important rituals that follow cremation.
This is why, traditionally, cremation takes place as soon as reasonably possible after death โ often within 24 hours in India.
Here in Sydney, however, things work a little differently.
There are legal requirements, paperwork, crematorium availability, the transfer and preparation of the deceased, arranging a Hindu priest, organising puja items, coordinating family members and many other details that need to come together.
This is where having a funeral director who genuinely understands Hindu traditions matters.
My role isnโt simply to arrange a funeral.
It is to understand why each ritual matters, what needs to happen and when, and then work behind the scenes to bring everything together so the family can focus on something far more important โ saying goodbye.
Where circumstances allow, we work towards arranging Hindu funerals within 24โ48 hours, while ensuring the rituals are treated with the dignity and cultural understanding they deserve.
Because when a family entrusts someone with their loved oneโs final journey, understanding the traditions should never be an afterthought.
