Welcome to Week 1 of our series: Regulation at Home!

Todayโ€™s strategy is something you already do! But did you know there is a specific way to do this to actually rewire the nervous system?

Guide (Make sure to watch the video in full first!)
Make it firm: Light touches can actually be alerting or ticklish to a dysregulated child. A tight, firm โ€œbear hugโ€ provides the deep pressure their muscles and joints need to feel grounded and safe.
Hold on long:ย  Research shows that holding a hug for around 20 seconds is a good time.
Be proactive: Do 20 second hugs throughout the day. Great times include after waking up, after school, and right before bed.
Follow their lead: Always make sure your child is comfortable. If they are too overwhelmed for a full-body hug, try firm squeezes on their shoulders or hands instead.

Try adding a few 20-second hugs to your daily routine this week and see the difference it makes!

Is your 4-year-old hopping, climbing, drawing, and getting more independent?๐Ÿคธโœ๏ธ

By 4 years of age, your child is developing more advanced gross and fine motor skills, helping them move with confidence and care for themselves more independently. ๐Ÿ’ชโœจ

Swipe to see what gross and fine motor skills you typically see a 4 year-old doing.โžก๏ธ๐Ÿง

Sound familiar? ๐Ÿ˜…
What can look like โ€œnot listeningโ€ is often a child finding it difficult to transition from one activity to another. Transitions require children to stop what theyโ€™re doing, shift their attention, manage their emotions, and prepare for whatโ€™s coming next โ€” thatโ€™s a lot of work for little brains!
๐Ÿ’ก Some ways we can support transitions:

โœจ Give countdowns (โ€œ5 more minutes, then shoesโ€)

โœจ Use visual schedules or first/then language

โœจ Keep routines predictable

โœจ Make it playful (โ€œCan your shoes catch your feet?โ€)

โœจ Acknowledge feelings when children are having fun and donโ€™t want the activity to end
Remember, successful transitions are a skill that develops over time. Sometimes a little extra support can make all the difference between putting shoes on... and sprinting away at full speed! ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ
