I’m a big fan of magnesium, It’s essential for over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, but each form serves a different therapeutic purpose.
🩸 When it comes to testing, serum magnesium doesn’t accurately reflect your overall magnesium status, it only measures what’s circulating outside the cells, which makes up just 1% of your body’s total magnesium. The majority is stored in bone, followed by muscle and soft tissue.
👉🏽This means bloods can appear “normal” even when there’s a functional deficiency inside the cells. The body works hard to keep serum magnesium within a tight range by pulling from tissue stores which can mask underlying depletion.
👉🏽That’s why I often prescribe magnesium based on clinical symptoms: neuromuscular tension, poor sleep, cramps, twitching, anxiety, constipation, PMS these often give a clearer picture than serum levels alone.
