Winter is an ideal time to think beyond your skincare routine and pay attention to your skin health.

Many sun-related skin changes don't appear immediately. They develop gradually after years of cumulative UV exposure and may present as rough, scaly patches, persistent redness, or areas that don't seem to heal.

For some diagnosed sun-related skin conditions, photodynamic therapy (PDT) may be an appropriate treatment option.

PDT combines a light-sensitive medication with a specialised light source to target abnormal cells while preserving surrounding healthy tissue.

Depending on the diagnosis, PDT may be considered for conditions such as actinic keratoses, superficial basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma in situ.

Not every skin lesion is suitable for PDT, which is why an accurate diagnosis and clinical assessment are essential before recommending treatment.

If you've noticed a persistent change in your skin, particularly on areas frequently exposed to the sun, don't ignore it.

One of the things I hear fairly regularly is from patients who have made significant lifestyle changes.
