By the time you turn 40, you’ve lost close to half the collagen you had in your twenties. It has nothing to do with how well you’ve looked after your skin, it’s simply biology.

Collagen is the protein that gives skin it’s structure. Think of it as the scaffolding sitting underneath the surface. Your body produces the most collagen in your twenties, then output drops around one percent every year. Once you move through perimenopause, that decline speeds up further, because oestrogen plays a direct role in supporting collagen production.

As collagen reduces, the scaffolding underneath softens. Skin that used to bounce back now takes longer to recover, and gravity starts to have more influence on shape and contour.

A common myth we hear in consultations is that collagen cream can replace what has been lost. Collagen molecules in skincare are too large to pe*****te down to the dermis where your collagen is made. A good serum can support the skins surface and protect existing collagen from further breakdown, but it can’t rebuild structure on its own.

The way to genuinely support collagen production is to stimulate your skin’s own fibroblasts, the cells responsible for making it. This is where treatments like DMK Enzyme Therapy and skin needling come in, they work with your skins natural repair process rather than sitting on top of it.
