What a fantastic Father's Day celebration at Thornton Park, Penrith! 🚗🏍️

Our second annual Father's Day Classic Car Show was a wonderful success, with residents enjoying an impressive display of classic cars and motorbikes. A surprise highlight was a beautifully restored London cab, with residents delighted to take it for a memorable joy ride.

One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was seeing resident Kerry Smith behind the wheel of a car he built from the ground up himself. The event sparked fond memories, lively conversations and plenty of smiles, making it a truly special Father's Day celebration for everyone involved.

🍻 Celebrating fathers, friendship and fond memories this Father's Day 💙

Southern Cross Care (NSW & ACT) wishes a very Happy Father's Day to all the dads, grandads, great-grandads and father figures across our communities.

Today is a time to recognise the incredible difference fathers and father figures make in our lives and to celebrate the guidance, support and wisdom they've shared with their families and communities. We also acknowledge that this day can be difficult for some, and we hold them in our thoughts.

To mark the occasion, a group of residents from our Casino Residential Aged Care home enjoyed a special Father's Day pub lunch together. Over a delicious meal, the conversation flowed as freely as the laughter, with plenty of joking, storytelling and camaraderie around the table.

One of the highlights was hearing residents share memories of their working lives, from trades and professions to the skills and knowledge they'd built over decades. There were a few trade secrets exchanged, plenty of good-natured banter and lots of pride in the experiences that helped shape their lives and communities.

It's always a privilege to hear the stories that connect generations and remind us of the lasting impact fathers and father figures have on those around them.

Celebrating our wonderful volunteer Lyn Olander, who was recently recognised at the 2026 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards for her outstanding service to our Southern Cross Care (NSW & ACT) Thornton Park Residential Aged Care community.

Lyn is the home’s longest serving volunteer, supporting residents at Thornton Park for the past six years. Throughout this time - including during the challenges of lockdowns - she has shown unwavering dedication, compassion and care.

Alongside her volunteer work with us, Lyn also serves in the Pastoral Ministry team at Nepean Hospital. Despite her many commitments, she always makes visiting our residents a priority, bringing comfort, companionship and kindness to everyone she spends time with.
Her warm smile, caring nature and bubbly personality have won the hearts of residents and staff alike. Even on the days she can’t visit, Lyn always asks us to pass on her thoughts and prayers - a true reflection of how deeply she cares for our community.

Lyn is one of hundreds of incredible volunteers who freely give their time, talents and support across our NSW and ACT homes and we are truly grateful for each and every one of them.

Congratulations, Lyn, and thank you for your years of dedication, compassion and support - you are a treasured part of the Thornton Park family.

What an incredible month it’s been for our St Martha’s Residential Aged Care home at Banora Point - and what a truly heartwarming achievement by our residents, staff and volunteers stepping out for something close to many people’s hearts. Today, they wrapped up their 56km Step Up to Breast Cancer Awareness Challenge - an event that carries deep meaning honouring the 56 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer each day. Team Mighty Martha’s didn’t just rise to the challenge … they stepped up, stepped out and stepped into something truly inspiring.

And with residents ranging between 76 and 98, they proved that age is just a number - making their achievement even more extraordinary.

Together, our community walked an astonishing 1,658km and raised an incredible $3,327 for breast cancer research. A huge congratulations to our highest achieving residents: Ellen who walked an impressive 17km, Marlene 15km, and Ann and Judith equal third with 11km each.

This challenge didn’t just help us step up for breast cancer awareness - it also supported our focus on keeping residents active and reducing falls. We’re thrilled that we saw a dramatic reduction in falls throughout August, proving that every step really does count.

To our residents, families, friends and staff: thank you for stepping in, stepping up and stepping alongside us. Whether you walked, donated, encouraged from the sidelines, organised activities or simply cheered us on, you helped turn every step into something meaningful. The generosity and spirit shown throughout the month has been truly heartwarming.

What started as a simple comment from our 96 year old, footy loving resident, Daphne Eyers, gently grew into a day filled with heart, history and happiness - the kind of day that reminds everyone why showing up for someone you love matters.

Daphne, a much loved resident of our Karinya Residential Aged Care home at Corowa, has spent a lifetime cheering on “her boys”. She watched her husband Len, his twin brother Frank, and their brothers Wally and Ray run out for the Corowa Spiders before the club joined with Rutherglen to become the Kangaroos. Then came her sons James and Robert, followed by grandson Brendan - and now she proudly watches great grandson Ryan play VFL for Werribee from the comfort of her room.

But one thing Daphne had never experienced was seeing her other great grandsons, Brodie and Jordan, play for Corowa Rutherglen in person. So, when she quietly mentioned she’d never seen “my boys” play, our Karinya team knew exactly what needed to happen.

Thanks to some wonderful teamwork, Daphne was there at the team’s home ground, John Foord Oval - complete with hot chips (because, as she reminded us, “you can’t go to the footy and not have hot chips”), a cup of tea, and a front row seat to a moment she’d long hoped for. She spent precious time with family, shared stories, and reconnected with people she hadn’t seen in years.

A very special thank you to Leigh Moss and Garry Cook for making the day possible. After a long, joy filled afternoon, the team returned to Karinya with full hearts, big smiles, and the quiet feeling they’d well and truly kicked one straight through the middle.

What an absolute privilege to help make Daphne’s wish come true. Moments like these made them all feel like best on ground and demonstrates what makes our Karinya community so extraordinary.

Our residents at John Woodward Residential Aged Care at Merrylands have been on a roll this week - literally! With our new bread maker added to the Leisure & Lifestyle toolkit, we kneaded to give it a try … and it certainly rose to the occasion.

Residents enjoyed a cosy Bread & Soup Cooking Session, getting hands on with the dough and soaking up all the sensory delights: the feel of the ingredients, the aroma wafting through the home, and of course the warm, freshly baked bread.

Baking together brings so many benefits - it encourages teamwork, sparks conversation, and creates a gentle rhythm that helps everyone slow down and enjoy the moment.

Sharing a simple activity like kneading dough or waiting for the bread to rise gives residents a chance to reconnect, reminisce, and feel part of something meaningful. It’s these small, shared experiences that help build confidence, joy and a real sense of belonging.

The best part? The laughter, connection and meaningful moments that make JWA such a special place. We’re already planning our next batch - because we’re proof that joy rises best when it’s shared.

Yellow was definitely the colour of the day at St Michael's Casino yesterday as residents and staff came together for a fun-filled Daffodil Day afternoon tea in support of the Cancer Council. There were plenty of delicious treats to enjoy, a quiz to test everyone's knowledge, colourful costumes and lots of laughter along the way.

Cancer has touched many members of our St Michael's family over the past year, making the afternoon especially meaningful as we remembered loved ones and came together to support those affected.
Thanks to the generosity of our residents, staff and visitors, we raised an incredible $220 for the Cancer Council.

A big thank you to everyone who joined in, dressed up and helped make the day so special. Together, we're helping bring hope and support to those impacted by cancer.

Friendships soared and spirits lifted as residents from Southern Cross Care's Corowa and Lavington Residential Aged Care homes came together for a heartwarming morning of connection, conversation and creativity.

The visit provided a wonderful opportunity to share stories, mingle with fellow residents and rekindle old friendships. Residents also enjoyed getting creative, crafting colourful hot air balloons and baskets before sitting down to lunch, creating a warm and engaging morning.

Activities like these are about much more than just a day out. Connecting with residents from other homes helps build new friendships, strengthen existing ones, and foster a sense of belonging across our communities. These meaningful social interactions are vital for wellbeing, helping to reduce isolation, boost confidence and keep residents connected to others.

It was a wonderful morning that saw friendships take flight, new memories made, and plenty of smiles reaching new heights.

56 kilometres, $2,243 raised and one very worthy cause!

Residents, families and staff at our St Martha's Banora Point home are making every step count as part of Team Mighty Martha's fundraising challenge, raising an incredible $2,243 and counting after smashing their original fundraising goal of $1,000 for breast cancer research.

Residents are walking an impressive 56 kilometres, completing laps around the home and nearby lake to raise awareness and funds for a cause close to many hearts. With some residents being cancer survivors and many families having been impacted by cancer, this challenge has been especially meaningful for our community.

The fundraising effort has been supported by a raffle featuring generous prizes donated by local Chempro Chemist, along with beautifully crocheted rugs lovingly handmade and donated by one of our talented residents.

The team's recent Longest Table Morning Tea brought everyone together while supporting our ongoing falls prevention program, encouraging residents to stay active, maintain mobility and build strength through regular walking. It was a wonderful way to combine movement, connection and a cause that means so much to so many.

A huge thank you to our residents, families, staff and community supporters who have walked, donated, contributed prizes and cheered Team Mighty Martha's on.

Together, we're proving that every step really does count.

Last week we proudly celebrated Aged Care Employee Day across Southern Cross Care (NSW & ACT), recognising the incredible dedication, compassion and commitment of our amazing team.

Every day, our staff make a meaningful difference in the lives of our residents, clients and their families. Whether it's providing care, creating connections, sharing a laugh, offering support or simply being there when it matters most, their kindness and dedication help make our communities feel like home.

This year, rather than focusing solely on a one-day celebration, we invested in the spaces our employees use every day. Each home and site received improvements to staff rooms and break areas, including new appliances such as coffee machines, sandwich presses and air fryers, as well as artwork and enhancements designed to create more welcoming spaces where staff can relax and recharge during their shifts.

And because appreciation shouldn't end with Aged Care Employee Day, fresh fruit baskets will also begin arriving in staff rooms across our services for employees to enjoy.

A special thank you also to our residents, clients and families for the hundreds of heartfelt messages shared on our Gratitude Walls. Every note, message and expression of thanks meant the world to our teams and served as a powerful reminder of why they do what they do.

From Tweed Heads to Parkes, Leeton to Deniliquin, Campbell to Coogee, and everywhere in between, we are incredibly grateful for the passion, care and commitment our people bring to work each day.
