Real Life. I’m a woman in my mid-50s, navigating life’s transformations with the wisdom gained from decades of personal and professional challenges. After years of pushing myself to meet expectations and ignoring the signs of burnout, I reached a point where I had no choice but to pause and take a hard look at my life. What I discovered was that burnout wasn’t just the result of working too hard – it was a deeper imbalance, rooted in unresolved trauma, perfectionism, and neglecting my emotional needs. Why Nostos Nest? The word nostos comes from ancient Greek and means a return home after a long journey – not just in the physical sense, but emotionally and spiritually. It’s about coming back to yourself, rediscovering who you are after life’s challenges, and finding healing along the way. Paired with nest, which symbolises comfort, warmth, and safety, Nostos Nest is a place of nurturing, reflection, and renewal. For me, this space represents the journey I’ve been on to let go of burnout, find balance, and embrace self-love. My hope is that it becomes a soft place for others to land, too, as they navigate their own paths back “home.”

What I Share Here
I created Nostos Nest to share my experiences, thoughts, and lessons learned, so that anyone facing similar struggles can find comfort, guidance, and hope. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll find on the blog:

Recovering from Burnout - how I began to heal from the inside out

Embracing Midlife Changes - reflections on shifting identity, body, purpose, and priorities

Quitting Drinking - a key part of my recovery, and one of the most transformative things I’ve ever done

Finding Joy After Struggle - learning to let go of perfectionism and make space for real joy

Self-Love and Balance - setting boundaries, cultivating compassion, and creating a life that feels like yours

Workplace Culture and Mental Health - my perspective on how workplaces can better support real people, and how individuals can take care of themselves within work environments that aren’t always built for wellbeing

Why This Might Help You

I know what it’s like to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and unsure what comes next. But I’ve also learned that if you slow down and listen to yourself - really listen - healing becomes possible. You don’t need to have it all together. You don’t need to be “perfect” to start again. Wherever you are on your journey, Nostos Nest is a place to breathe, reflect, and begin.

Two people can work in the same workplace and experience it very differently.

We each bring our own patterns into work - how easily we say no, how much responsibility we take on, how we respond to praise and pressure, and how closely we connect achievement with our sense of worth.

Then the workplace responds to those patterns.

Sometimes it rewards them.

And that feedback loop can keep going for a very long time before we recognise the cost.

What if you’re trying to fix the wrong part of your burnout?

Sometimes we put enormous pressure on ourselves. Sometimes the workplace really is asking too much. And sometimes our own patterns are being reinforced by the system we’re working in.

That’s the intersection I think we need to talk about more.

If you’re someone who over-gives, struggles to say no, takes on too much responsibility or ties your worth to achievement, a workplace that rewards those behaviours can keep reinforcing them - right up until the cost becomes too high.

Understanding what’s coming from you and what’s coming from the system can help you work out what actually needs to change.

I explore this in my latest post, “Burnout in Corporate Culture: When Good People Meet Systems That Never Say ‘Enough’”.

What if burnout isn’t entirely about you OR entirely about your workplace?

Sometimes the real problem is what happens when the two collide.

You might be conscientious, reliable and willing to go above and beyond. Then you find yourself in a performance-driven workplace that rewards you every time you over-give.

That combination can work brilliantly… until it doesn’t.

In my latest blog post, I explore how personal burnout patterns and corporate culture can reinforce each other, why some people get caught in repeat burnout cycles, and how to start working out which pressures are coming from you and which are coming from the system.

Because sometimes you need to change your own patterns, and sometimes the workplace really is asking too much.

Burnout in corporate culture is not just a workplace problem or a personal flaw. It often happens where personal tendencies meet performance-driven systems that never say enough. This post explores that intersection and what actually begins to change it.

We often wait until something falls apart before we ask whether a habit is serving us.

Relationships.
Health.
Work.
Finances.

But sometimes the real cost is less obvious.

Less energy.
Poorer sleep.
More anxiety.
A shorter fuse.
Feeling disconnected from yourself.

Those costs can be easy to overlook because life still appears to be working.

My latest blog post explores why functioning can make problem drinking difficult to recognise, and why understanding the role alcohol plays in your life can be far more powerful than simply counting drinks.

“Take a break” isn’t much of a burnout recovery plan.

When you’re already exhausted, overwhelmed and struggling to think clearly, knowing you need to slow down is one thing. Knowing what to actually do to help yourself recover is another.

That’s why I created the Real Life Reset - a practical four-week burnout recovery guide combining my lived experience with research-backed approaches, practical tools and small actions to help you find your way forward.

Four weeks gives you some structure, but there’s no deadline. You can work through it at whatever pace works for you.

If you’re experiencing burnout and wondering where to start with recovery, you can find the Real Life Reset here: https://nostosnest.com/product/real-life-reset-burnout-recovery-guide/

**How exhausting is it trying to be the person you think everyone else expects you to be?**

For years, I thought I had to keep proving myself, positioning myself and adapting to fit what was expected of me.

And when we talk about burnout, I think we sometimes underestimate how exhausting that can be.

Burnout isn't always just about workload. Constantly performing, striving for approval and tying your self-worth to how well you're meeting everyone else's expectations can take a huge amount of energy too.

This is something I wrote about during my own burnout recovery in March 2025, when I was asking myself: "When will just being me be enough?"

Thankfully, I know the answer now.

The real, authentic, unpolished version of you is plenty. ❤️

Perfectionists: how much of your energy are you spending making things better that were already good enough?

Perfectionism can be a huge contributor to burnout.

When you’re a perfectionist, it’s easy to spend far more time and energy on things than they really deserve. Every task becomes something to perfect, improve or optimise.

One thing I’ve learned through my own burnout recovery is to ask myself:
Does this really need excellence, or is good enough, good enough?

You can still have high standards without giving your highest standard to absolutely everything.

Sometimes managing burnout and perfectionism means being much more selective about where you spend your energy.

One of the reasons problem drinking can be difficult to recognise is because it doesn't always look like we expect.

You can be successful in your career, exercise regularly, look after your family, and still have a blind spot around alcohol.

High-functioning doesn't always mean thriving.

Sometimes the most valuable thing we can do is get curious about our own habits, without judgement.

That's what my latest blog post is about.

One of the biggest mindset shifts I had was realising that alcohol wasn't actually the reward.

The reward was what I was really looking for:
• Relief after a stressful day.
• A way to switch off.
• Permission to relax.
• A break from the mental load.

Once I understood that, I could start finding healthier ways to meet those same needs.

If you've ever wondered what role alcohol is really playing in your life, I explore that question in my latest blog post.

Can you have a drinking problem if you're still functioning?

Many people assume problem drinking is obvious.

But plenty of people are still going to work, paying the bills, exercising, looking after their families and keeping everything together.

Understanding the role alcohol plays in your life is often far more powerful than simply counting drinks.

My latest blog post explores why functioning can make problem drinking difficult to recognise, and why understanding the role alcohol plays in your life can be far more powerful than simply counting drinks.

If you've ever wondered whether your relationship with alcohol deserves a closer look, I hope it gives you something to think about.
