Sometimes, the smallest moments can make the biggest difference. ❤️

For newly appointed Director Clinical Services at Kellyville Private Hospital, Emily King, great patient care starts with listening, kindness and connection.

Emily’s journey in mental health nursing, from enrolled nurse to registered nurse and now clinical leader has been shaped by a passion for helping others and a belief that every interaction matters.

“The most important part of patient care is listening. People just want to be heard.”

A conversation. A box of tissues. A smile.

It might seem small, but to someone going through a difficult time, it can mean a lot.

Now in her new leadership role, Emily is passionate about supporting other nurses, shaping careers and creating an environment where people can thrive - because when we support our people, our patients ultimately benefit too.

We know first-hand how a conversation can change someone's life.

That's why this R U OK? Day we're encouraging regular check-ins and meaningful conversation - not just today, but every day.

If you notice someone isn’t quite themselves, take a moment to ask “Are you OK?” It could be the conversation they need.

We also know that asking the question can feel confronting. You might worry about saying the wrong thing, not knowing what to say next, or what you’ll do if the answer is “no.”

You don’t have to have all the answers. R U OK? has practical resources and guidance to help you start the conversation, listen without judgement and know what to do next.

Sometimes, simply asking, listening and being there can make all the difference.

A special thank you to Professor Richard Bryant AC and Natalia from EML Group for joining us this morning to share the latest evidence-based treatment approaches for PTSD in first responders.

Joined by our team from South Coast Private Hospital, it was an insightful morning and a valuable opportunity to learn from experts in the field about the evolving evidence and approaches to PTSD treatment.

For us, staying curious and continuing to learn is an important part of delivering better patient care. By engaging with experts, challenging our thinking and bringing the latest evidence into our treatment approaches, we can continue to evolve the care and support we provide to those who have experienced trauma.

Because when we keep learning, our patients benefit.

This commitment to evidence-based, specialised care is at the heart of The Base, our dedicated mental health program supporting first responders, veterans and defence personnel.

When can a counsellor help? 💙

You don’t need to wait until things feel overwhelming to reach out for support.

Life can bring challenges that are difficult to navigate alone and speaking with a counsellor can provide a safe, confidential space to explore what you’re experiencing, develop coping strategies and work towards positive change.

Counselling may help if you are experiencing:

💭 Stress and feeling overwhelmed
When everyday pressures start feeling difficult to manage.

🌧️ Anxiety or low mood
When worry, sadness or changes in motivation begin affecting your daily life.

🌱 Life changes or transitions
Including relationship changes, grief, workplace challenges or adjusting to a new stage of life.

💬 Relationship difficulties
Helping you better understand communication patterns, emotions and connections with others.

🧠 Emotional wellbeing and self-awareness
Building insight, resilience and strategies to manage challenges.

🌿 Support after difficult experiences
Including coping with distressing events, loss or periods of significant change.

Counselling isn’t about having all the answers it’s about having support while you work through what matters to you.

Our counselling services provide a compassionate and confidential space to talk with a qualified professional.

Being told you may need mental health treatment can feel like a big step.

For many people, the thought of coming into hospital can feel scary, overwhelming or simply unfamiliar. It’s completely understandable to have questions.

What will it be like? What happens when I arrive? What will treatment involve? Will I feel comfortable here?

That’s why our Admissions and Assessment Team offers one-on-one tours of our facility for patients and their families.

It’s an opportunity to see the environment for yourself, meet our team and ask questions in a supportive, private setting before making the decision to come into hospital.

Because recovery is about more than clinical care.

We believe in caring for the whole person - mind, body and spirit.

Our gardens and horticulture activities are just one part of creating an environment where people can connect, spend time outdoors and focus on their wellbeing alongside their clinical treatment.

If you or someone you care about is considering mental health treatment, you don’t have to navigate the next step alone.

Our Admissions and Assessment Team is here to answer your questions and help you understand what to expect.

🎙️ New podcast episode dropping soon

We'll be talking about borderline personality disorder (BPD), a condition that's widely misunderstood, heavily stigmatised and often reduced to a handful of myths that get in the way of real understanding and real recovery.

Some common myths we'll be busting:

❌ Myth: "People with BPD are manipulative." ✅ Reality: Many behaviours are actually attempts to cope with overwhelming emotional distress or intense fears of abandonment, not manipulation.

❌ Myth: "People with BPD can't recover." ✅ Reality: Many people improve substantially with appropriate treatment. Long-term recovery isn't the exception, it's common.

❌ Myth: "Medication is the main treatment." ✅ Reality: Psychological therapies are the cornerstone of treatment. Medication may help with specific co-occurring symptoms, but it's not the primary approach.

Language and understanding shape how people with BPD are treated, by clinicians, by loved ones and by themselves. This episode goes deeper into what BPD actually is, what recovery can look like, and why these myths persist.

Mental health support isn’t a one‑size‑fits‑all. For some people, the right level of care sits somewhere between occasional appointments and a hospital stay. That’s where mental health day programs play an essential role.

Day programs offer structured, therapeutic support while allowing people to stay connected to their daily lives, families and communities. They can help you:

✅Transition smoothly after an in hospital stay
✅Access extra support between GP or clinician appointments
✅Receive the right level of care without needing hospital admission

If you’re seeking flexible, community‑based support, our day programs can play an important role in your recovery journey.

Medication is common in helping to reduce attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in adults. But psychoeducation is often overlooked and it can play an equally important role.

Psychoeducation is all about learning and understanding how ADHD affects behaviour, emotions and thinking. Understanding can help improve self-awareness and provide tools for time management, organisation, prioritisation and emotional regulation.

Combining medication with psychoeducation provides a comprehensive tool kit that supports better focus, improved wellbeing and stronger relationships.
