There is nothing wrong with working your horse in an arena. In fact, arena work has an incredibly important place in a horse’s training. BUT… for horses that struggle with topline development, pelvic strength, posture, balance and proprioception, getting out on trails and working over uneven, undulating and varied terrain is essential. This is something that I talk to my client base all the time.
Walking up and down hills, navigating uneven ground, stepping over obstacles and constantly adjusting to changes in terrain encourages the horse to use their body differently. It challenges the hindquarters, core and stabilising muscles in a way that a flat, predictable arena simply cannot replicate.
It’s not about choosing arena or trails.
It’s about understanding that both have a purpose, and if we want to develop a stronger, more balanced and physically capable horse, a varied terrain should be part of your program.

🐴 One of the best exercises for your horse doesn't require an arena.
For horses with back issues, or simply to help prevent back problems, trail riding with plenty of uphill and downhill work is ideal.
Uneven ground, climbing hills and walking downhill help strengthen muscles, joints and ligaments in a way that's difficult to achieve in the arena alone.
Walking uphill encourages the horse to shift more weight onto the hindquarters, engage them more actively and naturally stretch over the topline. It's excellent strength training.
Walking downhill encourages the horse to bring the hindquarters further underneath the body to stay balanced, providing another valuable form of exercise.
As with any training, always consider your horse's age, fitness and level of education. Build strength gradually and keep the work appropriate for the individual horse.
Happy riding! 🐴
