The ACT Government, in partnership with RDN Health, invites ACT-based GPs to an interactive ADHD Masterclass designed to support the rollout of ADHD care reforms.

Held at QT Canberra, this one-day program will be delivered across two identical sessions - with Saturday 22 August session now full, Friday 21 August is selling out fast! ⚡

The Masterclass will be led by Associate Professor John Kramer, one of Australia’s leading experts in ADHD in General Practice. He is a highly respected clinician and educator who has been endorsed to initiate psychostimulant treatments for ADHD for over 30 years.

This event is fully funded by the ACT Government as part of the ACT Professional Development and Wellbeing Fund - supporting the ACT General Practice community. The event is free for GPs practicing in the ACT. Attendance at the workshop will meet training requirements for GPs to be continuation prescribers of psychostimulants under the ACT’s new standing CHO approval.

The Masterclass is accredited for CPD and PDP points (RACGP & Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM)), with certificates of attendance provided.

Finalists have been announced for the 2026 National NAIDOC Awards. Selected from hundreds of nominations, the finalists have been recognised for their significant contributions to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities over the past five decades, with health contributors featuring prominently.

The late Rhoda Roberts AO – a former nurse and Indigenous leader in arts, culture and media – has been awarded the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award, celebrating her transformative impact to the Australian arts and cultural landscape.

Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service CEO Christine Corby AM, a Gamilaraay woman and former RDN Board Director, has been named a finalist in the Female Elder Award category. Her impact and leadership in the north-west region of New South Wales has created holistic and culturally safe approaches to healthcare.

Warumungu, Wagiman and Nyikina man, Timmy "Jappangardi" Duggan OAM is a finalist in the Person of the Year Award. Timmy is the founder of Hoops 4 Health AUS, an Indigenous-led organisation based in Larrakia Country in the Northern Territory, adopting the power of sport to advocate for the health, wellbeing and leadership of participants, utilising the life experiences of its mentors with leading-edge trauma-informed neuroscience.

Thirteen local health professionals from a range of disciplines met recently for a workshop hosted by the Collaborative Care Project in and identified a set of practical activities to be progressed between now and the end of 2026.

Facilitated by RDN Health and supported by NSW Health, the Collaborative Care Program is a community-centred approach to addressing the health care challenges in rural and regional NSW. It is a partnership of organisations that want to give the local community access to the right services to help people get healthy and stay healthy.

The workshop focused on confirming the opportunities and activities the project group wants to prioritise in the upcoming three-year roadmap and included representatives from Southern NSW Local Health District, Bega Valley Shire Council, Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council, Eden Community Access Centre Inc, and Grand Pacific Health.

Before taking up studies of medicine, John Qi imagined a future behind the camera in film. When presented with the opportunity to participate in the Outreach Student Placement Program (OSPP) and shadow an Outreach provider at , John decided to seize the opportunity to combine both passions and produce a Social Justice Project documentary.

“Having grown up in a population dense, urban city of China, I never anticipated how much a rural community experience in Australia would shape my views on healthcare,” John said. “While in high school, I stayed with a homestay family in a rural area of Queensland. One evening, their youngest child [experienced a medical emergency]. It took 30 minutes for the ambulance to arrive, and although the local hospital was caring, it lacked resources,” John explained.

“I also observed the remarkable resilience and compassion of rural healthcare workers who offered comfort and guidance at the family’s darkest time. This bittersweet experience ignited a lasting concern inside me for rural healthcare ever since."

During his placement, John shadowed husband-and-wife optometry duo Kyriacoz and Katarina Mavroleftos, while documenting the stories, landscapes and experiences that shape healthcare in the Australian outback.

Dedicated optometrist Kyriacos (Kyri) Mavrolefteros was recently honoured with the prestigious Christine Craigie Annual Award for Distinguished Service in Optometry. Presented by Optometry NSW / ACT, the award recognises outstanding contributions to the profession and celebrates Kyri’s more than two decades of eye care in remote NSW, and his commitment to mentoring the next generation of optometrists.

Together with his wife and fellow optometrist, Katerina Mavrolefteros, Kyri has provided vital optometry services across the NSW outback for more than twenty years, serving communities such as , , , , and . Their Outreach work helps ensure residents can access essential eye care closer to home, rather than travelling long distances for treatment.

“We are indeed privileged to be in a profession serving such a basic need of our fellow Australians in the NSW outback,” Kyri said. "I would like to encourage all of you to consider a limited role in Outreach optometry in remote clinics."

Recently, NSW Health and RDN Health partnered to deliver an interactive masterclass on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with a focus on GPs working across south-western Sydney and western Sydney.

Hosted at the Mercure Sydney Liverpool, the masterclass brought together leading clinical experts and local GPs as part of a concerted effort to strengthen the management of ADHD in primary care in light of recent ADHD reforms. Around 120 GPs registered for the event.

“We’re thrilled to see such strong interest in the ADHD reforms from GPs across South West and Western Sydney,” said Dr Kerry Chant, Deputy Secretary Population and Public Health & Chief Health Officer. “We’ve heard from many families about how the reforms have made care for their children much more accessible and often closer to home".

“ADHD is everywhere. In every society, at every level,” explains A/Prof John Kramer OAM, who presented on ADHD fundamentals and Medicare billing for RDN Health during the masterclass. “GPs are used to managing chronic conditions; we do it in every other system and disease at all ages – diabetes, asthma, and so forth – ADHD is a long-term condition and needs great management,” he says.
