🌸 The First 40 Days: Nourishment Is Part of Healing

The first 40 days after birth are a sacred and deeply transformative time. Your body has just done something extraordinary — growing, carrying and birthing your baby — and now it needs nourishment, warmth, rest and gentle care to recover.

Across Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine traditions, the postpartum period is often viewed as a time to rebuild, restore and replenish.

Food can be one of the simplest and most powerful ways we care for a new mother. 🤍

🌿 Why nourishing food matters postpartum

After birth, your body is recovering from pregnancy and labour while adjusting to the demands of feeding and caring for your newborn.

Warm, nourishing meals can help you:

✨ replenish energy and nutrients
✨ support recovery after birth
✨ provide protein, healthy fats, iron and other essential nutrients
✨ support hydration and regular digestion
✨ make feeding and caring for baby feel a little more manageable
✨ create moments of comfort and care when everything else feels overwhelming

Rather than expecting a new mother to jump straight back into salads, smoothies and complicated meals, postpartum nourishment can focus on warm, soft, easy-to-digest and nutrient-dense foods.

Think:

🥣 Kitchari
🍲 Slow-cooked soups and broths
🌿 Dahl with nourishing spices
🍚 Congee with chicken, vegetables or eggs
🥕 Slow-cooked stews
🥑 Nourishing healthy fats such as ghee, olive oil, avocado and tahini
🌴 Dates, nuts and seeds
🍪 Homemade nourishing snacks
🍵 Warming teas and nourishing drinks

And perhaps most importantly — food should be easy.

A new mother shouldn't have to spend precious moments of rest standing over the stove wondering what she's going to eat.

🐝 Let ME nourish you, TOO.

The first 40 days aren't about doing more.

They're about being cared for while you heal, recover and learn your new rhythm with your baby.

At The Postpartum Hive, I love creating nourishing Ayurvedic-inspired and TCM-inspired meals designed with the postpartum mother in mind — bringing warmth, comfort and nourishment into those precious early weeks.

🤍 You Were Never Meant to Do Postpartum Alone 🤍

There is so much preparation for birth... but what about everything that comes after?

The postpartum period is a time of healing, learning, and adjusting to life with your new baby. It can be beautiful, but it can also feel overwhelming, exhausting, and lonely. Every family deserves to be supported, nourished, and cared for during this precious season.

At The Postpartum Hive, I provide gentle, compassionate in-home postpartum support for families across Darwin, creating space for you to rest, recover, and simply enjoy getting to know your baby.

✨ How I can support your family:

🌼 Warm, nourishing Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine inspired meals, snacks and healing drinks.

🤱 Breastfeeding or bottle-feeding support and encouragement.

👶 Gentle newborn care while you shower, sleep, eat or simply take a moment for yourself.

🧺 Light household help such as folding washing, tidying the kitchen, changing bed linen or preparing family meals.

💛 Emotional support, a listening ear, and reassurance as you navigate the early weeks of parenthood.

📝 Prenatal postpartum planning sessions, helping you prepare for a smoother, more supported recovery before your baby arrives.

🍲 Fill Your Freezer cooking sessions, so your freezer is stocked with nourishing meals before birth.

Whether you're welcoming your first baby, growing your family, are living away from family support or you're new to Darwin, you don't have to do this alone.

My hope is that every mother feels held and every family feels supported.

✨ Because when a mother is cared for, the whole family thrives.

🤎 Stuffed Dates: A Simple Ritual for Labour & Postpartum Nourishment

As you prepare to welcome your baby, it's often the simplest foods that can offer the greatest support. One of my favourite nourishing snacks for pregnancy and postpartum is stuffed Medjool dates.

Filled with creamy nut butter and finished with a drizzle (or coating!) of dark chocolate, they're delicious, convenient, and packed with nutrients to fuel your body through birth and beyond.

✨ For Labour Preparation
From around 36 weeks of pregnancy, many women choose to include 6 Medjool dates each day as part of their birth preparation.

Dates may:
🤎 Help support cervical ripening
🤎 Provide a natural source of energy for labour
🤎 Be rich in fibre, potassium and antioxidants
🤎 Offer sustained fuel without processed sugars

Stuff them with almond, peanut or cashew butter for healthy fats and protein to keep you feeling satisfied.

🌿 For Postpartum Recovery
Those early weeks with a newborn require so much from your body. Stuffed dates make the perfect one-handed snack while feeding your baby.

They can help:
✨ Replenish energy after birth
✨ Support recovery with nourishing whole-food ingredients
✨ Provide healthy fats, fibre and minerals
✨ Satisfy sweet cravings while offering lasting nourishment

I love making a variety with:
• Almond butter + dark chocolate
• Peanut butter + flaky sea salt
• Cashew butter + pistachios
• Tahini + cinnamon
• Dark chocolate drizzle with crushed nuts

At The Postpartum Hive, nourishing food is one of the ways I care for mothers. These little bites are a favourite addition to my postpartum visits because every mum deserves food that supports her recovery as much as it delights

Ginger, goji and chia porridge

The most delicious and warming breakfast.
This photo popped up on my memories for when I first started making it in my own postpartum 3 years ago. It is so nourishing and is just like a big warm hug.

Recipe for one big bowl.

1cup oats
1/2 cup water
1/2 to 1 cup milk of choice
1tblsp chia seeds
2tsp freshly grated ginger
1 - 2tblsp goji berries
1 tbsp ghee
Honey and fresh fruit to serve

Place oats in the pot and cover with water and a tsp of apple cider vinegar to 'wour' and soak overnight. This makes the oats easier to digest and removes any impurities.
Drain and rinse before cooking as below** You can skip this step**

Place oats, chia, ginger, water and 1/2 cup milk into a pot.
Slowly bring to the boil. Storing frequently.
Slowly add more milk, in the last minute add in goji berries and continue stiring until desired consistency has formed and the berries are plump.

Serve into a bowl, too with feet fruit, a drizzle of honey and a spoonful of ghee.

Sit down and enjoy

I used this with both of my bubs and it always worked a treat. No nappy rash. I ended up switching the paper towel to face washers folded in a large container and I had a lidded soaking bucket that I would change out daily. It was so effective and I still recommend it to all of my family, friends and clients.

✨ GHEE: Liquid Gold for Postpartum Healing ✨

In Ayurvedic postpartum care, ghee is considered one of the most nourishing foods for a new mother. Warm, grounding and deeply restorative, it supports healing from the inside out during the sacred first 40 days. 🤍

Why I love ghee in postpartum meals:
🌿 Easy to digest and gentle on the gut
🌿 Supports tissue healing and recovery after birth
🌿 Nourishes hormones, energy and milk supply
🌿 Helps calm the nervous system and reduce dryness
🌿 Rich in healthy fats to support brain function and emotional wellbeing

At The Postpartum Hive, I use ghee throughout our Ayurvedic & Traditional Chinese Medicine inspired freezer meals to create warming, comforting dishes that truly nourish new mothers. From kitchari and dhal to soups, porridges and slow-cooked stews — every ingredient is chosen with intention. 🍲✨

Food is more than nourishment.
It’s medicine.
It’s care.
It’s support for your postpartum journey. 🐝
