~Perfectly Imperfect~
For many years, my culling process was rigid, selecting only the most technically perfect frames and discarded anything that didn't meet that standard. I worried endlessly about how clients might perceive an image that wasn't flawless.
It took me a very long time to understand who I was as an artist - not who people expected me to be, but the photographer - the artist I became when I gave myself permission to pause and to feel.
During every session, there are times where I am adjusting settings, testing light, or simply keeping pace with the beautiful unpredictability of children.
I call this the "In Between" moments.
It is often during these moments is often where I catch something extraordinary - An eruption of genuine laughter, A quiet moment of connection, A fleeting expression of pure joy. Magic. These moments never made the final gallery, simply because they were not perfect.
But here is my truth.
I have learnt that as an artist there is something that I value much more then perfection.
Authenticity.
As a Mum, these imperfect moments are the ones I treasure most.
As a Documentary Photographer, I believe they deserve to be preserved.
As an artist, this is my canvas, and I refuse to allow my fear of perfection or perception to override my artistic integrity, the very reason I am tasked with being there in the first place.
Your story deserves to be told in full. Moments that are raw, honest and deeply human - and perfection is never a part of that story. Presence, connection, and authenticity are.
Sometimes the most meaningful images are the ones that are created in the In Between, where we are reminded that real life is beautifully, unapologetically imperfect.
That deserves space too.
