The Year of the Fire Horse:
Why 2026 Will Be Fast, Fiery, and Impossible to Ignore

We are leaving the Year of the Snake behind us, and with it all the skins that we have shed over the last year. The Snake energy asked us to move away from old ways and habits that no longer serve us and reassess our priorities. And for many it has been quite an emotional journey!
Now hold on tight everyone, as we are set to jump on the back of the Fire Hose on the 17th of February and gallop into the new year. 2026 is poised to flip the script - dramatically. Where the Snake invited introspection, the Horse demands action.
The year is shaping up to be one of speed, bold, decisive action, rebellion and radical momentum. Some of this we are already starting to see on the political stage all over the world.

What Makes the Fire Horse So Powerful?
In Chinese astrology, the Horse is associated with vitality, speed, perseverance, and freedom. When paired with the Fire element, which brings intensity, passion, and urgency, its qualities are amplified.
Fire Horse energy amplifies the Horse’s natural independence and restlessness, creating a powerful drive for freedom, self-expression, and breaking away from limitations.
Historically and socially, Fire Horse years often coincide with upheaval, cultural shifts, and bold collective movements, where people feel compelled to challenge authority, redefine identity, and push for radical change.
This will be the first Fire Horse year in 60 years, marking the completion of a full Chinese zodiac cycle. As such, it may feel especially restless and dynamic, with immense potential for growth, but also a heightened risk of conflict if energy isn’t directed consciously.

Opportunity, Optimism, and Momentum
The Year of the Fire Horse is widely viewed as one of optimism and opportunity. In Chinese culture, the Horse is also linked with success and good fortune.

How to Work with Fire Horse Energy
The Year of the Horse rewards momentum over hesitation and instinct over overthinking. This is not a year to wait quietly for permission.
• Listen to your inner knowing - and act immediately! Fire Horse energy favours swift, free-spirited movement. This is not the year for endless planning. Say yes, respond promptly, take initiative, and move before doubt creeps in.

• Take up Space: Visibility matters more than perfection in 2026. Don’t shrink yourself or wait to be “ready.” Those who step into the spotlight, share their skills, and believe in their abilities are the ones who thrive. The more openly you show up, the more doors open.

• Follow your full body “yes”! When your body feels energised, excited, and alive, your instincts are speaking. Fire brings intensity, urgency, and passion, which can feel motivating but also demanding.

Supporting Your Wellbeing in a Fast-Moving Year
With all this momentum, balance becomes essential. The Fire Horse pushes forward relentlessly, but longevity depends on how well energy is managed.
• Exercise: If you feel drawn to start running, meditating, practicing Pilates, or adding a morning Tai Chi/Qigong routine, begin immediately. This year favours those who move first and adjust as they go.

• Horse energy promotes movement, circulation, motivation, and mental clarity. However, consistency matters more than speed. A Horse year is not about running the fastest but running the longest.

• Without intentional rest, burnout becomes a real risk. The key is to honour the need for movement while prioritising recovery. Grounding practices such as walking, stretching, breathwork, journaling, time outdoors, and maintaining consistent sleep routines help channel Fire Horse energy sustainably.

Do More of This in the Year of the Horse

• Regular, sustainable movement and exercise
• Nervous system regulation through breathwork, meditation, journaling, or nature
• Creating clear, protected boundaries around rest

Do Less of This in the Year of the Horse
• Over-scheduling every moment
• Ignoring fatigue and warning signs of exhaustion
• Confusing busyness with true productivity

The Bottom Line
The Year of the Fire Horse is not subtle. It asks for courage, visibility, and trust in your instincts - and it rewards those who move decisively toward what sets them alight.
While the pace may feel intense, it also offers rare opportunities for rapid growth, success, and reinvention.
In 2026, standing still may feel more uncomfortable than taking the leap.

I’m excited for this year ahead, are you? :)

I first discovered Steven Clavey through his books in our uni library, referencing his texts for pretty much every assignment I wrote. When it came to finding a clinic placement, I didn’t have to think twice about whom I would like to observe.

What was meant to be a three months placement ended up being three years observing him, learning from him, and finding my passion for herbs through him.

I was quite awestruck by his knowledge, and feel incredibly lucky and honoured to have learnt so much from him. A week doesn’t go by without me using one of his favourite herb combinations or formulae. And his formula for lower back pain is still the only thing that works for me!

I’ll forever cherish my time with him at The Apricot Grove… not just the learning, but also his dry, quirky sense of humour, his love for tea, the smell of herbs being prepared in the back, of ‘Chen Pi’ drying on the window sills, dispensing herbs with the traditional old scales, and piles and piles of herbs and books everywhere you looked.

At the beautiful memorial today, we got to pick books from his collection. I picked a herb book - naturally - and Wuthering Heights as the thought of Steven reading it made me smile. We talked so much about herbs… but I would loved to chat to him about Brontë sisters and my other favourite authors!

Thank you and farewell to an incredible teacher! You’ll be missed!
