I’ve been there…left the massage booking to the last minute, my body is falling apart and my back is already in spasms.
Finally sat down to meditate when I’m so dysregulated that the stillness feels uncomfortable.
Had someone tell me I need to go for a run because I’m getting irritable.
So many of us practice reactive self-care, and I see its consequences daily - in injuries that could have been prevented, surgeries that may have never been needed, mental health that has suffered. And yes, I’m still a culprit of it too 🙋♀️(hello year long hip pain that I could possibly have avoided)
So what does proactive self-care look like for me now?
- regular massage bookings in advance regardless of how I’m feeling, or if my body is ‘sore’.
- prioritising and scheduling movement and weight training for longevity and strength in the decades to come.
- meditation when life is good, that will support me when the curve balls come.
- taking time to be still and check in with my body.
- reminding myself that rest is as productive as action, and not letting myself believe I have to earn it!
There are so many ways you can support your future self, I’d love to know your favourites!
Let’s make proactive self-care the norm, and not feel guilt or shame about prioritising our own wellbeing 🫶
