Latin name Hericium erinaceus, lions mane is a culinary mushroom that’s native to Asia, Europe, and North America. Mostly grown in Asia for culinary and medicinal uses. It grows on live and dead hardwood and is a 2 cm white round fungus with dangly spines that resemble a lion’s mane. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for at least 3000 years. It contains more than 30 active ingredients including hericenones (aromatics) and erinacines (diterpenes). These soluble, low molecular weight compounds readily cross the blood brain barrier and increase production of nerve growth factor (NGF). To read more, click the link below!

The so-called sunshine vitamin is essential for good health. But it is not a vitamin; it is actually a hormone. A vitamin is a substance that we need but can't make, we have to get it from our diet. Vitamin D is produced in our skin under the influence of UV light. It is altered in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D- which is we measure when you have a blood test for vitamin D. The active form is made in the kidneys (calcitriol) and that does the business! Recommended daily intake is 600 units per day (800 units if you are older). To read more, click the link below!

Mitochondria (single = mitochondrion) are often referred to as the powerhouses of the cell. They're responsible for most of the cell's ATP production. ATP has been called the energy currency of the cell. Mitochondria are tiny (less than 3 micrometres), but boy do they pack a punch! Every cell type in the body has mitochondria except red blood cells. Heart muscle needs constant energy to keep beating and is often thought of has having the most mitochondria - some 5,000 per cell making up to 40% of the mass of the cell. Liver cells have around 2,500 mitochondria and muscle cells around 1,000. Brain cells can have many thousands of mitochondria because of the length of their axons and their complex inter-connectivity. All in all, your body has around 100,000 trillion mitochondria and about 2 billion mitochondria are made in the body each and every second. To read more, click the link below!
