For clients and families who experience noise sensitivity…

Australia's first national emergency alert test is happening on Monday 27th July. Every phone will vibrate and play a loud siren sound for about 10 seconds. For many autistic people, an unexpected noise like this can be distressing. A bit of preparation makes a real difference.

The test happens at 2:00pm AEST, 1:30pm ACST and 12:00pm AWST.

Three things that help:

1. Talk about it beforehand. Knowing the sound is coming, and that it means everything is OK, takes away the shock.
2. Plan for the sound. Headphones, a quiet room, or switching the phone off are all fine options.
3. Stay close. Count the 10 seconds together, then it's over.

Everyone is safe and no action is needed on the day.

Please share this with families, schools and support workers so no one is caught off guard. More info at

This is awesome and an amazing Universal Design initiative from Japan that is available for everyone. But I see it as having game changing accessibility effects for folks with language and communication barriers to effectively self advocating!!

I love a story of breaking barriers and keeping dreams alive!

The quote emergency registrar Dr Dinesh Palipana (left) lives by is "say yes, then learn how to do it later." (thanks Richard Branson!)

Despite an accident nearly 16 years ago leaving him paralysed, Dr Palipana has never let it stop him from achieving his dreams.

"When it comes to disability or even trying anything knew, sometimes we intellectualise it too much. Sometimes you have to dive in and figure it out as you go," he said.

"I was surrounded by people who were willing to help me as well, and we're setting the standard globally."

Dr Palipana now reminds others in similar positions that dreams are still achievable, with interns travelling across the world to train with him - most recently, Dr Daniel Wei (right), who's about to commence his internship in New Zealand.

"This was my first time back in a clinical environment since I sustained a T6 spinal cord injury last year," Dr Wei said.

"Being at GCUH with Dinesh helped me overcome the psychological and physical challenges of practicing while seated. He mentored me, helping me refine my positioning and setup for examinations and procedures so I could develop objective, repeatable skills."

"Seeing others come through with a similar dream and goals and be able to support them is really special," Dr Palipana said.

"Medicine is ultimately about people and caring for people," Dr Wei added.

"An inclusive and diverse workforce better represents the communities we serve, and this representation is known to reduce disparities and improve equitable outcomes."

Awesome news Queensland Country Bank Stadium

🌻🌻🌻

The Sunflower program has been introduced at Queensland Country Bank Stadium!

This Invisible Disability Week (19 to 25 October) we’re proud to share that we’re recently joined forces with Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Australia & New Zealand to introduce the Sunflower program to our venue.

The Sunflower is a globally recognised symbol for non-visible disabilities, also known as hidden or invisible disabilities. At Queensland Country Bank Stadium, patrons can choose to wear a sunflower symbol (lanyards, badges or wristbands), to discreetly identify to venue staff that they have a hidden disability and may need extra support, understanding or time during their visit. Venue staff wearing Sunflower lanyards or pins are available to assist when needed.

We are proud to foster an inclusive culture where all staff, visitors, and athletes feel welcome and respected.

I’m thrilled to see the expansion of this program and I’ve seen it working in action.

Tell me if you’ve used the Sunflower Lanyard? How did you find it?

Don’t forget to check out online guides for major city airports and certain major attractions including Melbourne Museum. They include a guide to sensory intensities for different locations and icons for high sensory input areas 👀👃👂

It’s Invisible Disabilities Week (19–25 October)! 🌻

Around 80–85% of people with a disability have one that isn’t visible. These include neurological, cognitive, sensory, mental health, and chronic conditions that aren’t always immediately apparent.

Not all disabilities are visible — but a little understanding and kindness can go a long way in making everyone feel seen and supported.
