Where do you start, especially in Australia, especially in Queensland?!

It's not a failure when your intents and purposes was never to grow your own clinic to begin with. I just wanted to start. Somewhere. Unconventional? Maybe.

Responding to Dr. Cara McDonald | Dermatologist 's take on Korean skincare - as a Korean cosmetic nurse who's used it her whole life 👀

Disclaimer: my routine isn't 100% K-beauty, of course 😉

2024 was a rollercoaster of a year for me.
Burn-out from agency nursing & health reasons,
started further studies into cosmetic nursing,
and lots of hurdles to go through setting up a legitimate business for the first time (no one in my family has ever opened a business before, so it was terrifying).

And finally, after everything,
I soft-opened my skin clinic as a cosmetic nurse
at the end of 2024.

I thought the hard part was over.

Boy, I was wrong. It was only just the beginning.
While juggling a hospital job & a business
is the best of both worlds I never knew could exist,
there are days where I catch myself wanting to give up either/or & focus my energy into one.

Because that’s what many successful entrepreneurs tell you. That you gotta focus and give all-in to succeed.

But what is “success” anyway?
What is true success for me?

I realised, for me,
it was not fast growth,
but SUSTAINED growth.
As I attended a conference and saw a nurse entrepreneur on stage who expanded her clinic only after 18 months of opening, something inside me was boiling.
I thought it was motivation -
that I needed to be like her to call myself a success.
But I realised that wasn’t what was boiling inside me.
It was the true desire for going back to the basics and taking it slow.

Somewhere along the line,
you let other people write your goals for you.
But there’s no one right way of living.
Yes, it may not be the fastest way to
building wealth, fame, or business.
But I am now asking myself - at what cost?

Goals can change, and that is not embarrassing.
And the only comparison you need to make
is with your past self.
Would your past-self approve of your decisions?
I hope mine does.

If you want to get the job, get a NO
If you want to change careers, get a NO
If you want to open a business, get a NO
If you want to sell your product, get a NO
If you want to offer your service, get a NO
If you want to make an impact on others, get a NO

If you want to become successful in life, get a NO

After graduating my nursing degree, I applied to as many new grad programs as I can, but all got rejected. After I landed a job in a high-pressured nursing home, I settled & stopped trying for 5 years, until my hubby encouraged me to. Why? I didn't want to admit, but deep down inside I feared rejection. When I finally did apply, I got the job so easily to my amazement. And all I could think about the whole situation was, "why didn't I do this sooner"

Since then, things have changed. I wanted to work as a cosmetic nurse for so long, and I did get some NOs, but that didn't stop me & pushed me to open my clinic. Now I'm doing both: dream job & business owner *mind-blown*

So I'm gonna be even more bolder from now on to ask for more from Life. And be happy if I get a NO. Because now I know that the more NOs you get, the closer you are to a YES.

If you wanna see me get a NO, follow along Tessa Jeon

i used to feel either exhausted, overwhelmed, or empty after i came home from work. until i realised how i spend my time after work is just as important as how i spend my time at work. which is when i finally started to feel calmer and more aligned with my inner self by taking the time to nurture my body, mind, and soul.

if you're a cosmetic nurse in Australia, especially in Queensland, you've probably felt this at least once

i used to think:
"if i were a doctor, regulators wouldn't be questioning where i get my medicine, or whether my business model is compliant. i'm running this legally. why does it feel like they're targeting me? i should've studied medicine"

but that was just guilt talking.
guilt handed down by my parents,
for not having "Dr" next to my name

now i know
doctors have it harder than i ever gave them credit for. 10+ years & a couple hundred grand studying the entire body, only to end up doing the same cosmetic work I do, if that's the path they chose. more responsibility. more liability. insurance costs alone are 10x mine

so i asked myself:
am i actually devoted to medicine?
or was i just chasing what a title represents?

i know doctors who regret it.
i know a few who've walked away from the title entirely

i have more to give to this industry
than being "just a cosmetic nurse"

i am more than my title.
that's why "RN" isn't in my handle

I want to be known for Me.

im still figuring out what that looks like, out loud 🤍

i'm 40 and i'm not afraid to admit that:

1. i didnt choose nursing because of passion. i chose it to escape korea. i'm grateful now, because it led me to cosmetic nursing, which i do love.

2. people think i'm an extrovert. but my social skills are acquired skills. anyone who knew me in high school or before knows how quiet & introverted i actually was.

3. i may have developed separation anxiety. 8 school transfers, back and forth for years between and within the US & korea, always the new kid in school. adapting was my priority, not adventure.

4. i still struggle with my Third Culture Kid identity. too korean for americans, too american for koreans, too both for australians.

5. i lied about my age to koreans for years (age matters a lot in korea). i skipped a grade, so all my peers were older than me, but i didn't want to use honorifics or call them unni/oppa. graduated uni at 21, and no one took me seriously for a long time.

6. now i want to look younger, and stress out when other 40yo korean women look younger than me.

7. i've changed careers 6 times: law, translation, IGO, makeup, cosmetic tattooing, nursing. and i envy people who have "20 years in the industry" under their belt.

8. often times i fake it till i make it. because the world's a Catch-22: you need the job to gain experience, but you need experience to gain the job. i know i'm good at what i do, so just gimme a chance.

9. i can work painfully slow on certain things. too many tasks at once and i freeze... like a broken computer. just gimme a moment gotta reboot my brain to prioritise my to-do list.

10. i have too many passions. that's probably why i've pivoted so many times. most days it feels like i'm just wasting time. but i want to believe it's my superpower.

life can often feel overwhelming, but i'm learning to take it one step at a time. if you feel the same way, follow along i'm here for you :)
