Renee Carr primarily works within the paediatric neuropsychology sector, which studies the relationship between brain health, thinking and behaviour in ch
ildren. This involves developing an understanding of their “cognitive functioning” through the means of standardize testing materials, which help identify each child’s personal strengths and weaknesses. The focus of most assessments involves a thorough investigation into attention and concentration, memory, language skills and visual skills a long with emotional and behavioural regulation. The assessment may be used to ascertain certain diagnoses or whether there is any underlying organic issues affecting the child’s cognitive functioning. It may also be requested to develop a profile with recommendations to assist with a child’s learning skills in the classroom or perhaps even in every day life. Common referrals include; children with suspected developmental issues such as ADHD, learning difficulties such as dyslexia, intellectual disability, Autism, social difficulties, emotional issues such as anxiety and depression or history of abuse or neglect. Or children with congenital or acquired brain injuries as a result of physical trauma, head injury, hypoxic brain injury, stroke, substance abuse or heart, lung and organ failure. Most assessments take around 2-4 hours depending on the complexity of each child. Feedback is provided to parents and referring agencies to provide strategies and recommendations for people involved in the child’s care. Sometimes a neuropsychologist may offer long-term therapeutic intervention for issues regarding rehabilitation, emotional and behavioural management, and social and learning difficulties. Sometimes some counseling is offered to the child or family members who are struggling with a child that has a significant brain injury or is struggling significantly in daily life.
