When your child is having a hard week, it can feel like everything is harder - routines, emotions, behaviour, and everyday tasks.

Often, this isn’t about “behaviour getting worse”, it’s about your child’s nervous system being overloaded.

In these moments, the goal shifts from teaching skills to supporting regulation and connection.

That might look like slowing things down, reducing demands, offering movement or sensory input, and focusing more on co-regulation than instruction.

Skills don’t disappear in hard weeks, they become harder to access until your child feels regulated again. This phase will pass!

If you’re ever unsure how to support your child through these moments, we’re here to help you make sense of it.

Zingo is one of our favourite games for building attention, visual scanning, matching, and early literacy skills through play.

It’s simple, engaging, and easy to adapt depending on your child’s needs, whether you’re working on turn-taking, waiting, vocabulary, or flexible thinking.

Games like this are a fun way to support learning without it feeling like “work”

It can be really confusing when your child seems to be making progress… and then suddenly things feel harder again:

More meltdowns.
More frustration.
More resistance.

It’s easy to feel like things are going backwards, but often, this is actually part of progress.

When children are learning new skills, they’re working just outside their comfort zone. That can feel overwhelming, and it often shows up as bigger emotions or changes in behaviour.

They’re not regressing, they’re adjusting.

With the right support, these moments help build resilience, confidence, and new skills over time.

Progress isn’t always smooth… but these bumps along the way are often where the most growth happens 💚

If you’re ever unsure about what you’re seeing, we’re here to help you make sense of it 💚

Progress in OT isn’t always big or obvious.
Sometimes it’s small, quiet changes like trying again, asking for help, or managing emotions just a little better.

These moments might seem tiny, but they’re the building blocks for confidence, independence, and everyday skills.

Progress isn’t linear… but it is happening.

Remember, there’s nothing wrong with slow and steady (just ask the tortoise 🐢). It’s not a race, and it’s not a comparison. Every child moves at their own pace, and that’s okay 💛

If you’re ever unsure about your child’s progress, we’re here to help you see it 💛

Today we recognise the mums, grandmothers, carers, and mother-figures who show up every day with patience, strength, and unwavering love.

We see you in the small moments no one else always notices; the morning routines that take extra time, the emotional regulation support after big school days, the advocacy at appointments, and the quiet persistence behind every skill your child is building.

In paediatric occupational therapy, we are often reminded that progress doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in the everyday moments you hold, guide, and support your child through.

To the mothers who are celebrating milestones today, and to those holding space for challenges, we honour you.

Wishing you a gentle and meaningful Mother's Day 🦋

UNO is one of our favourite go-to games in paediatric OT sessions, and not just because it’s fun 👏

UNO is a simple game that builds powerful skills through play, and it’s a great way to work on important developmental skills in a way that feels natural and engaging for children.

In OT, we use UNO to support turn-taking, attention, emotional regulation, communication, flexible thinking, and executive functioning skills (such as planning and impulse control).

The best part? You can easily carry this over at home 💛

Try keeping games short, focusing on the process (not winning), and modelling calm responses.

So why do OT’s Love UNO? It’s Simple, fun, and full of learning 💛

🎲 What’s your child’s favourite game at the moment?

Today, Making A Difference OT turns 6 💚

What started as a big leap has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of.

Over the past 6 years, I’ve worked with so many amazing kids and families across homes, schools, daycares, the community, and now in our clinic space too.

Watching children grow in confidence, independence, and self-belief will never get old.

Alongside this, I’ve had the opportunity each year to mentor student OTs and support new graduates as they begin their careers. Guiding the next generation of OTs adds a whole other layer of meaning to the work I do, and is something I am very passionate about.

To the families who have trusted us, the schools who have welcomed us, and the kids who show up exactly as they are, thank you.
You are the reason this business exists.

Here’s to continuing to make a difference 🦋💫

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking…
“Maybe they’ll grow out of it.”
“Am I overreacting?”
“The teacher mentioned something…”
“Why does this seem so much harder for them?”

You’re not alone.

It might be worth exploring OT support if your child:
• Struggles with dressing, buttons, zips or toileting beyond what’s expected for their age
• Avoids drawing, colouring or handwriting tasks
• Tires quickly with fine motor tasks
• Finds playground equipment challenging
• Has frequent big emotional reactions that are hard to recover from
• Seems overwhelmed by noise, clothing textures or busy environments
• Has difficulty following multi-step instructions
• Struggles to start or finish tasks independently

One or two of these occasionally? That’s part of development. But if challenges are:
• Persistent
• Causing frustration or distress
• Impacting school or daily life
• Affecting confidence
Early support can make a big difference.

Seeking support isn’t about labelling your child. It’s about understanding them - and giving them the tools to feel capable and confident. And sometimes, even just having reassurance is enough!
