International Cat Day is a reminder to care for the cats who share our homes, routines and lives.

For many of us, pets are family. They are part of our comfort, our everyday moments and the home we return to.

Meet Malcolm Pittendrigh, National Director of Salvos Funerals.

Malcolm has served as an employee of The Salvation Army for more than 28 years, mostly in accounting and finance roles. He has been part of Salvos Funerals from the very beginning, from its early concept in 2015 through to the service it is today.

“This is special work. It’s a real privilege to support grieving families simply and practically, but more than that, to show human compassion and care.”

For Malcolm, Salvos Funerals is about walking alongside families during a season that can feel hard and overwhelming. It’s about listening, showing kindness, easing the administrative burden, and helping families feel supported as they plan a service for someone they love.

A Funeral is as individual as the person that we are honoured to care for.

Therefore, each celebration of life should be as unique and wonderful as they were.

Symbols of life often tell a story, as opposed to a traditional floral tribute.

This gentleman had a lifetime passion for motorbikes. His family wanted his farewell to reflect this.

We placed his helmet, riding boots & favourite belt with special buckle on his coffin.

The music chosen also reflected his love of iconic Rock & Roll Bands.

Adoring the freedom of getting away on a long ride, we say “Ride Free.”

Writing a eulogy can feel overwhelming. How do you possibly put a whole life, and all the love surrounding it, into just a few minutes?

The truth is, a heartfelt eulogy doesn’t need to be perfect. Often, the most meaningful words are the simplest and most honest ones.

A gentle place to begin can be:
• Sharing your relationship to the person
• Choosing one quality that defined them
• Telling a few stories or memories
• Reflecting on the impact they had on others
• Ending with a final farewell, quote or message

Sometimes it’s the small stories, the everyday moments, and the little details people remember most.

Meet Leonie Lang.

For nearly 30 years, Leonie has walked alongside families during some of life’s hardest moments.

Starting her career in the funeral industry in 1995, Leonie says it has been a privilege to support families as they honour and remember their loved ones with dignity and care.

“Being a funeral director isn’t only about death. It’s about honouring lives and helping the living find their way forward.”

Over the years, Leonie has learned that funeral care is often less about endings, and more about remembrance, compassion, and presence when words fall short.

“Every funeral service tells a story; our role is to help families say goodbye with love, dignity, and meaning.”

It’s work that asks for great care and compassion, and for Leonie, it remains deeply meaningful to walk alongside families in this way.
