Friday - Breton Barn Thoughts:

The "Nothing's Wrong" Horse

I hear it all the time...
"There's nothing wrong with him."
And often, they're right.

The horse isn't lame.
The horse isn't sick.
The horse isn't injured.

But...

He's standing with one hind leg parked out.
He's holding tension through his jaw.
He's swishing his tail when the girth goes on.
He's become a little less willing than he used to be.

Sometimes horses whisper long before they shout.

The art isn't just noticing when something is wrong.

It's noticing when something has changed.

What subtle changes has your horse shown you lately?

When I talk about my Equis, people tend to get a wow factor when I mention a donkey and then I mention the mules and the flood gates open with questions.
Please do not think cause you have horses you can train and work with donkeys or mules - they are different.
Both donkey and mules have so much strength and that is to do with the flight and fight instincts which they go fight and horses go flight.
And whilst mules are sterile they still have seasons and the males can still be stallion like.

Does your horse struggle with separation anxiety?

Have you ever stopped to wonder why?

It's easy to think a horse simply doesn't want to be alone, but the reason often runs much deeper than that.

In a herd, horses that aren't at the top of the pecking order can be more vulnerable. To increase their sense of safety and security, they often form strong bonds with another horse. Together, they become a team—watching out for one another and navigating life as a pair.

When that trusted companion is suddenly taken away, the remaining horse can feel exposed and unsafe. What we see as calling out, pacing, fence walking, or becoming distressed isn't necessarily bad behaviour—it's often fear and uncertainty.

Understanding the "why" behind a behaviour can help us approach our horses with more empathy and patience.

Sometimes what looks like separation anxiety is really a horse saying:

"I don't feel safe on my own." ❤️🐴

As you know I went to a dissection of a horse who had some issues.

This horse was a dressage horse who could not perform and one of the biggest factors was that he had Trauma to his T2 - T4 spine and T10 -L6 was affected by kissing spine - so what does that mean?
He was unable to have flexion left or right with his pelvis and was in so much pain. There was a number of other things that he suffered from but this was a key issue.

In reality he only had 8 of his spine which had movement.

Have you ever thought what you actually ride on?

I have a theory...

Most horses know it's Friday.

Why else would they suddenly:
✔ Lose a shoe
✔ Find a new itchy spot
✔ Discover imaginary monsters
✔ Need an emergency spa day

Coincidence? I think not. 🤔🐴

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
