Turning up the heat this winter? Keep your eyes protected!

Indoor heating may keep you warm during the chilly winter months, but it can also dry out the air, and your eyes. Here are a few simple ways to keep your eyes comfy whilst staying warm indoors:

Avoid sitting too close to heaters or vents
Use lubricating eye drops if needed
Add an extra layer of warm clothes or use a blanket to stay warm
Consider using a humidifier to balance the air
Stay hydrated throughout the day
A warm home shouldn’t come at the cost of dry, uncomfortable eyes.

Can you believe we're already halfway through the year? Time really does fly!

The middle of the year can be a useful time to check in on your vision and overall eye health. Even if your vision seems fine, regular eye examinations can help detect changes early and support ongoing eye health.

Consider this a friendly reminder to check when your next eye examination is due and to prioritise your eye health for the rest of the year.

If you have any concerns about your vision or eye health, speak with your optometrist.

Did you know that 90% of vision loss is preventable or treatable when detected early?
Yet many Australians delay their eye checks, often until symptoms become serious.

Millions live with long-term eye conditions like myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), astigmatism, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

The problem? Well, many of these conditions can develop gradually, without noticeable symptoms in the early stages.

That’s why regular eye exams matter. They help detect issues early and give you the best chance to protect your vision in the long run.

Let JulEYE be your reminder to put your eye health first, because prevention starts with awareness.

This JulEYE, let’s build simple habits that go a long way in supporting health. Here are some daily practices to support your eye health:

Blink more & take screen breaks – Follow the 20-20-20 rule to reduce digital eye
strain: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. In addition, make the effort to consciously remind yourself to blink more frequently when using screens for extended periods.

Use eye drops to stay hydrated – Dry eyes? Keep eye drops close by and stay
well-hydrated to keep your eyes hydrated.

Wear sunglasses for UV safety – Even in winter, UV rays can harm your eyes.
Protect them outdoors with high quality sunglasses. Look for those with a rating of
UV400+.

Practice good hygiene – Wash your hands before touching your face or eyes, and
clean your lenses or glasses regularly to avoid irritation and infection.

Refill & update prescriptions – Make sure your glasses or contact lens
prescriptions are up to date. Remember your vision can change over time, and can
vary between glasses and contacts so ensure your prescription is suited to your
current needs.

Schedule regular eye exams – Don’t wait for symptoms. Proactive eye exams help
catch issues early, before they affect your vision. Book one now!

Remember, healthy eyes start with healthy habits. Which one will you start to implement today?

Are your eyes feeling dry or irritated this winter? You’re not alone!

Common symptoms like stinging, burning, redness, and a scratchy sensation in the eyes often indicates dry eyes. Interestingly enough, watery eyes can also be your body’s natural reflex to combat dryness.

Why does this happen? Well, winter’s cooler air temperature and the use of indoor heating reduces humidity, leaving your eyes more prone to dryness and discomfort.

To keep your eyes comfy this winter:

Use lubricating eye drops to stay hydrated.
Keep warm by adding an extra layer of warm clothes or a blanket instead of a heater
to help reduce dryness.

Avoid direct exposure to heaters or drafts that can dry out your eyes.

Follow these simple steps to keep your eyes happy and healthy all winter long!

This week, we shine a light on diabetes and eye health for National Diabetes Week.

While diabetes is often associated with blood sugar management, it can also affect eye health. Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of several eye conditions that may affect vision over time.

Many diabetes-related eye conditions can develop gradually and without noticeable symptoms in their early stages.

Regular eye examinations are an important part of monitoring eye health and detecting changes over time.

This National Diabetes Week, take a moment to learn more about the connection between diabetes and eye health. If you have questions about your eye health or vision, speak with your optometrist.
