Prevent Handpiece Leaks – A Simple O-Ring Check
Are your NSK high-speed handpieces leaking where they connect to the coupler?

If you've noticed water leaking from the bottom of your handpiece where it attaches to the coupler, it's often a sign that the coupler-end O-rings need replacing.

The good news is that this is a simple maintenance check that can easily be carried out by your team.

Please refer to the photo, which shows the correct positioning of the O-rings on an NSK high-speed handpiece (4 larger O-rings and 1 smaller O-ring).

To inspect the O-rings:
~ Unscrew the bottom housing of the handpiece.
~ Check the O-rings for signs of wear such as cracking, brittleness, hardness, splitting, missing sections, or if the handpiece is leaking water from the base.

We recommend replacing the complete set of O-rings rather than individual rings, as they typically wear at a similar rate due to repeated autoclaving and the regular attachment and removal of the handpiece from the coupler.

Replacement O-ring sets are available for $40+GST per set and can be posted directly to your practice.

If you're comfortable carrying out the replacement yourself, simply remove the old O-rings with a probe, fit the new O-rings into the same positions (being careful not to puncture the new O-rings with the point of the probe during installation), and screw back on the bottom housing.

Please note that these O-rings are designed specifically for genuine NSK handpieces. They may not seal correctly on some compatible or hybrid brands due to slight dimensional differences. If you use MK-Dent handpieces with NSK-style coupler fittings, we also stock the correct MK-Dent O-ring sets - just let us know when ordering.

As part of every handpiece service at Dental Drill Solutions, we inspect the coupler-end O-rings for wear and replace them where required. Tip of the Day: Keep Your Handpieces Organised the Right Way

Need an easy way to identify handpieces between surgeries or clinicians?

One thing we don't recommend is permanently marking them by engraving or etching the surface.

⚠️ Never use a handpiece and bur to engrave another handpiece.
This can damage the turbine, weaken the surface of the metal, and create tiny crevices that may compromise effective cleaning and infection control.

It's also best to avoid coloured identification tapes. Over time they can trap moisture, contribute to corrosion, and present their own infection control challenges.

Our recommendation? Use coloured silicone identification rings.

These durable, autoclavable rings simply slide onto the base of each handpiece, making it easy to identify equipment by dentist, surgery, or procedure. They can be removed or changed in seconds, making them a simple, hygienic and cost-effective organisational solution.

In fact, we use the same system in our own workshop. When we return bulk-serviced handpieces, we fit them with silicone rings. Any handpieces still in the practice without a ring become an easy visual reminder that they're due for their next service.

Did you know that we fix Polishing Systems too?
The most frequent problem you may encounter is a blockage.

It is so important to make sure that you wash all parts after use, and they must be thoroughly dried/blown through with air, as any moisture will make the powder stick and harden like concrete, thus eventually causing a blockage.

If your Polishing System is cracked it can also create a lot of problems to your entire operating system as the powder can get sucked back through into the chair line, and then deposited back out again through the coupler to your handpieces once it has been changed over.

This can damage every single handpiece turbine that is used on the chair until the problem is resolved, costing a fortune in repairs, so please be extra vigilant of any damage that may have occurred to either the tip or the coupler end, or the powder chamber itself.

*Please ensure you provide the main polishing system body, powder chamber and handpiece/nozzle attachment so we can test & clear the whole unit.
