How leaders respond when someone discloses a mental health concern at work has significant outcomes for both employees and workplaces.

🧠 New SuperFriend research published in the Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation shows that supportive supervisor responses are strongly associated with:
✔️ Higher productivity
✔️ Stronger intent to stay
✔️ Lower workplace stigma

The encouraging news? Supportive responses were more common than negative ones.

The opportunity? Training leaders to respond well in these critical moments.

Because creating psychologically safe workplaces isn’t accidental, it’s learned.

As workplaces reset for 2026, here’s a reminder of why wellbeing matters:

Just 11% of people with a mental health condition say their workplace made a positive impact on their condition.

When work is done well, it can be a powerful protective factor. When it’s not, it can make life harder.

That’s why SuperFriend helps workplaces identify their wellbeing strengths and opportunities, benchmark what matters most and take clear, evidence-based action to help people thrive at work.
