Wimmera Base Hospital medical teams have the comfort of knowing they are assessing patients with the most up-to-date ultrasound equipment available, thanks to the generosity of the Horsham community.

Major fundraising groups Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation and Horsham’s Blue Ribbon Foundation have joined forces to purchase two Sonosite LX portable ultrasounds for Grampians Health’s Horsham campus.

Egged on by her Wimmera Cancer Centre colleagues, patients and their carers, Cancer Resource Nurse Kerry Piera bravely bathed in ice cold water to commemorate Daffodil Day last week.

In doing so, she raised more than $1000 for the Cancer Council of Victoria and importantly, highlighted the need for more volunteers, particularly volunteer drivers, to support the Oncology and Palliative Care teams.

Horsham businesses Cheeky Fox Café and Horsham Florist generously sponsored the event with cancer improvement officers from Grampians Integrated Cancer Services, Dr Ashlee Hendy and Maggie Johnson helping Kerry to organise and promote the event.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Patty Kinnersly as Chair of the Grampians Health Board of Directors.

Previously the Chief Executive Officer for Women’s Health Grampians, and current CEO of Our Watch, Ms Kinnersly brings to the role extensive experience in leadership, strategy, and organisational development.

“We are thrilled to have Patty join the Grampians Health community,” said CEO Dale Fraser. “Patty is well known to our health service and the broader region, having previously served on the Boards of both Rural Northwest Health and Ballarat Health Services.

“Her commitment to community wellbeing, combined with a strong understanding of health, social, and public sector issues, will be a tremendous asset to Grampians Health as we continue to deliver on our strategic priorities and strengthen outcomes for our communities.”

A Unique Opportunity for ACEM Trainees in Regional Victoria

Horsham Emergency Department has recently secured ACEM accreditation up to TS4, opening the door for trainees to complete accredited Emergency Medicine training in a supportive rural setting.

This stunning sunrise view, captured by FACEM Dr Chris Partridge during a morning walk before work, is a reminder that training in Horsham comes with benefits both inside and outside the Emergency Department.

As the newest member of the Southwest Victoria ACEM Training Network, Horsham combines:

The Wimmera Base Hospital Ladies Auxiliary has welcomed new executive members following it's AGM, with Gail Cramer appointed President and Maureen Lewis, Senior Vice President.

Former President Anne Stevens has transitioned to the role of Junior Vice President, while Gay Baker and Robyn Phillips continue as Honorary Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Annie Potter will serve as Honorary Assistant Secretary, while former Treasurer Elaine Morrison will assist Ms Phillips. Dianne Lewis will continue in her longstanding role as Manager of the Opportunity Shop.

The Auxiliary also celebrated another remarkable year of community support, with the Opportunity Shop and it's 25 dedicated volunteers raising an incredible $110,000. The funds have helped provide vital equipment for Grampians Health and support a range of local charities.

Now in it's 102nd year, the Auxiliary continues to make a significant impact and is always looking for new volunteers to join the committee or support the Opportunity Shop.

The trial investigated a targeted therapy for patients with a rare genetic mutation, contributing valuable evidence to support more personalised cancer treatment and reinforcing our commitment to world-class research and care in regional Victoria.

Grampians Health Cancer Resource Nurse Kerry Piera is taking the plunge and going all in to raise awareness for the Cancer Council’s Dip for Daffodil Day on August 20. Her plan involves an inflatable plunge pool filled with ice cold water, a chicken costume and a large amount of courage.

Sponsored by Cheeky Fox Café and Horsham Florist, Kerry is hoping to raise awareness of the need for volunteers at Wimmera Cancer Centre and Stawell Oncology, particularly the need for volunteer drivers.

As our first Palliative Care manager, Larna Woodyatt is carrying a valuable life lesson into her role.

Larna has worked in the critical care areas of Intensive Care and Organ Donation for the past two decades. Early in her career, Larna remembers working with an Emergency Department physician who told her; ‘you only get one chance to give someone a good death’.

The profound guidance has been a lingering constant throughout Larna’s career and remains just as significant today.

Grampians Health provides three streams of palliative care services that Larna oversees. Gandarra Palliative Care Unit is the 11-bed palliative care in-patient service in Ballarat, Grampians Palliative Care Consultancy also based in Ballarat and Grampians Palliative Care Community based in Horsham. These teams care for and support patients and their families through the entire Grampians region.

While Intensive Care nursing was the forefront of Larna’s career, she has spent the past 10 years working as an Organ Donor Coordinator for Grampians Health and DonateLIfe Victoria, supporting organ donors and their families through some of the most difficult and emotional moments of their lives.

Larna said her previous role had provided important preparation for working with the Palliative Care team.

Our aged care workforce is a vital part of the Grampians Health community, and on Aged Care Employee Day last Friday (7 August) we took the opportunity to celebrate and thank these incredible people for their dedication, care and compassion.

A number of morning and afternoon teas were held across our sites, including the annual ‘reverse cafés’ in Ballarat, with aged care community residents reversing the roles and tending to staff with an offering of tea, coffee and sweet treats.

Not just on Aged Care Employee Day, but every day, we acknowledge the enormous difference our aged care workforce makes to the lives of those we are privileged to care for. Thank you for all that you do.
