Wondering if online therapy will actually work for your child?
It depends on the child, the therapy goals and the way the sessions are delivered.
But for many families, online therapy is much more than just convenient.
❤️ It can be as effective as face-to-face therapy.
The research shows online therapy can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy across psychology, speech pathology and OT.
The NDIS also recognises telehealth as a valid therapeutic support when it is appropriate and good value for money.
So how do you know if it might work for your family?
🗣️ Online speech therapy may work well if your child engages with screens, visuals or games.
📌 Speech therapy can be highly interactive online.
✅ Therapists can use digital activities, pictures, videos and play-based tasks.
For AAC users, online therapy can be especially useful because the therapist can see how the communication device is used at home.
Therapy is more helpful when it connects to real life.
🏡 Online OT may work well if the goals are about daily routines.
Morning routines.
Dressing.
Mealtimes.
Sensory regulation.
Fine motor tasks.
Emotional regulation at home.
Online OT lets the therapist see the actual environment where these things happen.
They can coach parents in the moment.
They can suggest changes using what the family already has at home.
✅ Online therapy might be a good fit if:
💛 Getting to appointments is stressful
💛 Your child is more comfortable at home
💛 You live far from services
💛 You need parent coaching
💛 Your goals are connected to everyday routines
💛 You want therapy to fit real life, not just clinic life
Online therapy is not a second-best option.
For the right child, the right goals and the right therapist, it can be practical, effective and easier to sustain.
