Disenfranchised grief happens when a person experiences a loss, but other people do not recognize or understand their pain. Because of this, the grieving person may feel that they do not have the right to be sad or talk about their loss. For example, someone may lose a beloved pet and hear comments like, “It was just a dog, you can get another one.” even though that pet was an important part of their life. This kind of grief can also happen after a miscarriage, a breakup, the loss of a job, or the loss of a dream. The pain is real, but the support and understanding from others are missing. As a result, the person may carry their grief quietly and feel alone.

Why do people go to counsellors and therapists?

Counsellors and therapists are formally trained accredited professionals who employ interpersonal skills to help and guide people who are seeking support during a challenging time.

Anyone can benefit from counselling, but sometimes people are really struggling they need a non judgemental and empathetic ear.

Research has shown that being heard in a caring manner is very therapeutic, as it lowers defences, regulates emotions, and builds deep trust. For people who have had difficult childhoods or traumatic experiences this alone can start to soothe an overactive nervous system, build a therapeutic relationship and provide opportunity for growth.

For many, talking therapy will be all they need and sometimes one session is enough. For others it might take longer, because everyone is different and counselling and therapy should always be tailored to the best interests of the client.
