High Value Play - 0-8 mo✨☁️ Baby Physio Recommendations 😍

As a baby and kids Physio, I’m always looking at toys through two lenses: Does my baby actually like it? And what is it actually doing for them while they play? And I value a low stimulation toy (not a huge fan of squeaky songs and flashing lights here!) 😇🤗 + we aimed for a whoollleee lotta tummy time! 😍

Here’s why these 8 picks are on high rotation in our house:
- O Ball: The best for those early “I’m holding it!” moments. It’s so easy for tiny fingers to grip.
- Rolling Mirror: Perfect for tummy time - nothing beats the “who’s that?” look in the mirror. Encourages crawling when a baby plays with it whilst on their hands and knees.
- Soft Activity Cube: A little sensory powerhouse with all the different textures and crinkles. Great option for propped up supported sitting if placed in baby’s lap.
- Baby Maracas: Great for learning that “I move this = it makes a sound” connection.
- Ocean Water Mat: Makes floor time feel like a mini sensory adventure. Facilities weight shift in tummy time, a precursor skill required for rolling. Encourages single hand reaching in tummy time too.
- Sensory Books: Perfect for practicing those “pincer” skills while turning the pages.

Facts about Brave Bodies Founders - Ru + Tarryn 💃

💒 We've been married for 6 years. 💍
🇿🇦 We were both born in South Africa 🦁 But we are proud Australians!!
👩‍🎓👨‍🎓 We studied together... Ruan was the note taker. 🤓
🤝 We have worked together in 3 different jobs! In Perth, In Arnhem Land and now in our own business, Brave Bodies.
💜 Brave Bodies grew (💥) from a genuine community need in the South West that we didn't know existed when we stepped into it. Brave Bodies has supported 250+ babies, kids and teens, that humbles us.
💭 We think about the kids we see often, and we care, a lot. We want the best for your family and your child in every way possible!
🐣 Running a business sleep deprived has tested us!

We have lots to learn but for each step Brave Bodies takes forward we are so thankful for the grace shown to us, trust placed in our team and the joy shared. 🤩

BEEP TEST 🏃‍♂️💨 oh and Hiii! It's me again, Tarryn 😄 Back as the GESC physio 💃💜

Today at GESC High School, we tackled the beep test! The students were such good sports - really pushing their limits. Our highest score hit Stage 6! 🏆

The teachers and EAs work non-stop to lead morning fitness, and we love celebrating those wins. At the start of our programs, we take outcome measures to give us concrete evidence of improvement. It was so sweet to witness students cheering each other on today, and even better having them come up to me afterward to check their results with so much pride 🥹 They had every reason to be proud!

Our time in Guinea draws to an end 💛
We have spent lots of time with babies and children with CP, strokes and neurodegenerative conditions, met many beautiful families, trained local physios and doctors and contributed to the set up of Sacre Coeur's physiotherapy department. It's been a privilege to be here but we look forward to seeing all our South West and Great Southern families again soon! 😊

Ruan and Tarryn are heading to Guinea this Thursday evening to volunteer for two weeks at the country's first and only children's hospital. They are continuing to support the development of the paediatric physiotherapy department there.

If your child has outgrown any orthopaedic or specialist footwear (piedro boots, first walkers or billy shoes) and you would like to donate them to a child in Guinea, please contact Tarryn at 0479 081 885 to arrange a collection.

Meet our new Senior Physiotherapist - the wonderful Deb Mitchell. 😍🥳

Deb works out of our Margaret River (Refresh Physiotherapy) and Bunbury Clinics (Paed HQ) as well as servicing babies, children and teens in community settings.

Deb has worked in paediatric and disability fields since graduating from Curtin University in 2005. In 2021, she was awarded a Master of Advanced Paediatric Physiotherapy Practice with her research focused on pain expression in children and adolescents with Autism.

Her qualifications are:

Master of Advanced Paediatric Physiotherapy Practice, Monash University
Graduate Diploma in Clinical Rehabilitation, Flinders University
Bachelor of Science (Physiotherapy), Curtin University of Technology

Not only is she very clever, but she is kind & FUN 🤩
