Today, June 3rd is Mabo Day. A day to remember, acknowledge and celebrate the work of Torres Strait Islander man, Eddie Mabo. On June 3rd 1992 the High Court of Australia overturned the declaration of Australia as ‘terra nullius’ or land belonging to no one. A landmark legal victory recognising the existence of native title and acknowledging Indigenous rights and ongoing traditions and cultural connections to the land.

We recognise that this land that we all live and work on is land belonging to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of this nation, and that sovereignty was never ceded.

Meet Vanessa 🧡

Vanessa joined Karitane earlier this year, bringing her experience from allied health in private practice into a role focused on connection, community and culturally safe support for families.

From the moment she joined Karitane, Vanessa says she felt welcomed by the team and quickly built meaningful connections across the organisation.

One of the highlights of her time so far has been helping facilitate Karitane’s presence at Yabun — a First Nations-led festival held annually on January 26th that brings together community, culture, music and connection.

💬 “It was really meaningful to represent Karitane in an established, culturally safe space, strengthen relationships with community, and give staff the opportunity to experience Yabun for the first time.”

For Vanessa, the most rewarding part of her role is helping families feel safe, supported and empowered to reach out for help when things feel overwhelming.

💬 “I really value being able to help build safe spaces — not only for First Nations people, but for all families — where they feel seen, supported and empowered to seek support.”

Thank you, Vanessa, for the care, connection and passion you bring to your role and to the families we support every day 💙

Today marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week — a time to reflect on our shared history, celebrate the cultures, histories and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and consider the role we all play in reconciliation. 🖤💛❤️

This year’s theme, “All In,” is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day — recognising that meaningful change requires all of us to listen, learn and take action together.

At Karitane, we are committed to building and strengthening respectful relationships with First Nations communities, families and organisations across the communities where we provide care and support.

Through our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), culturally informed practices, Aboriginal Family Support Workers and community programs, we continue working towards meaningful and lasting action.

We recognise that reconciliation is not passive — it is an ongoing journey grounded in truth-telling, respect, learning and action.

As we reflect during National Reconciliation Week, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting culturally safe, inclusive and accessible services for First Nations children and families.

Today, on National Sorry Day, we pause to acknowledge the deep and lasting impact of the Stolen Generations — Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families and communities. We honour the strength, resilience, and courage of these children, their families, and descendants, and we recognise that healing is an ongoing journey — one that requires truth-telling, compassion, and collective responsibility.

We reflect on the strength and resilience of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by, or who were part of, the Stolen Generations and acknowledge that the healing process is forever ongoing. We acknowledge that we can’t change the past for these children and their families, but we can change the future.

At Karitane, we continue building respectful relationships with First Nations communities and families. We are committed to walking alongside communities, ensuring their lived experience, past and present, guides our service delivery and supports offered. We will continue to listen, advocate, be responsive to, and support all First Nations people, ensuring we provide culturally safe, meaningful, and accessible parenting support services.
