INTRODUCING 🥁 THE SOCIAL SPACE @ Speak & Develop! 💬💬
Having worked with many neurodivergent teens, one area that comes up frequently is navigating friendships and the increasingly complex social situations that arise during adolescence. This might include meeting new people, maintaining friendships, navigating disagreements or misunderstandings, communicating boundaries, making plans with others, having confidence in self-advocacy, or knowing what to do when a social situation doesn’t go as expected.
Our hope is to create a group that gives teens natural opportunities to practise these skills, with the speech pathologist there to support and coach when useful/needed.
Importantly, the aim would not be to teach teens to appear more neurotypical or to follow a set of “social rules”. Being a neurodiversity-affirming practice, we recognise that there is no single “right” way to communicate. Instead, we would like to help teens better understand themselves and others, build on their individual strengths and interests, and develop practical strategies that support them as they become increasingly independent.
We would love for The Social Space to be a place where teens can form connections with other teens and potentially maintain those friendships in the long term outside of the group sessions, if desired.
