The dark side of Pain therapy is when you deliver the news to pain sufferers that their pain is unable to be “cured”. That their pain may never disappear out of their conscious experience. That their pain is a part of their life. This is a harsh truth to digest for the individual especially if they have been involved in the merry go round of pain medicine and have not met the false promises of freedom from pain.

There is a bright side amidst the darkness though and that comes from the gentle inquiry into their story, the real and honest questions slowly work their way through the many knots in their belief system to help them see pain as an ally, a way their nervous system is communicating to attend to them self. The grip of pain will loosen, not clinging for your attention but leading you to salvation.

It is a truly humbling experience when you see the untangling of their armour built from the inside out to protect them from the threat valence of their pain experience, real or perceived, from the deep chambers of their despair the rebuilding begins, towards a deeper connection with the self, transcending from the confines of their body into a space where clarity and peace arise as sediments from their chaos.

There must be an equal playing field when we play the game of change, guidance and empowerment.

There is a density in conventional therapy where roles are clearly defined, therapist/MD treating patient/client. Within that density lies a “hierarchical” delivery of care, which most call treatment. Treating from this lens can induce shame and guilt in the person asking for care/help...

When it comes to inducing long lasting change, says it in a few simple and powerful words.

As Health care professionals, we can all live by these words.

41 years later... The international Association for the Study of Pain ( IASP) has changed their lens on pain.

Here is my interpretation....................................................

👉 Pain is adaptive, protective and dynamic
👉 Pain is in tissues, pain is in mindset, beliefs and identity, pain is in loneliness, segregation and even in connection.
👉 Pain is the whole person
👉 Pain can be spoken 🗣 to and with but it can also be observed, felt and demonstrated without words.
👉Pain is finally heard

👉👉👉👉Pain can be helped by all allied health practitioners

Imagine if kindness was our second nature, like conscious breath, available whenever and wherever, like pain, a response to perceived threat to promote behavioural change towards a balanced state.
———————————————————
Abundant, effortless and unconditional, imagine if kindness was Imbedded in our autonomic nervous system, alongside our immune system, unleashed to any foreign and unkind invader.
———————————————————
To remain kind to every recipient is to be immune to any hate and criticism. To be kind is to also hurt in ourselves and for others, an imperative to learn in this experience we call being human and to be the change we want to see in others. ................——————...............————
Kindness can heal the bearer and the recipient. 🙏🙏

When you sit with another human being, you are sharing a lot of sensations and feelings. Whatever sensations you have, the other person is resonating towards them. ..........................................
The neuropsychology community calls this mirroring 🧠🧠, I also like to refer to it as an intercorporeal relationship.
Mirror neurons respond to actions that we observe in others.🤯

👉Our whole organism from birth to death is designed to co-participate in each other’s affective internal life.

These neurons have basically shaped our civilisation. 👍

Many studies have shown that the relationship that you have with your therapist is one of the strongest predictors of treatment success.🏅🏅

👉Bringing compassion in pain therapy is essential to foster growth from the interaction, rather than being stuck in an attempt to escape the experience👌.
————————————-
Despite your specialty, as a health practitioner, there needs to be a part of you that gets where your client is in their pain ( suffering) and how they sit with their experience rather than primarily focus on which limb their pain lives in.
————————————
Your clients need to know that you are beside them in their journey and accept them when they are at their most vulnerable.

Many people assume that the only time they are supposed to see a physio is when they meet injury or pain. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
This is not entirely incorrect as pain is a strong signal to change behaviour but it’s also not entirely the truth.
—————————————————-
As a therapist, I have evolved from treating injuries to helping people rediscover themselves in the roles they play from re-acquainting with their bodies.
👉Some have discovered this path through suffering persistent pain, some, through experiencing a life altering injury but I also have had the pleasure to cross paths with individuals who simply value their health and have accounted themselves to maintain a responsibility to remain well despite the absence of pain or injury...............................................................
Anxiety, fear, anger and trauma are all expressed through the body, held in the body, and move with the body.
It simply goes beyond injury, it transcends through life. ..............................................................
I have gained some wisdom 💫 from these individuals who simply seek to live through their bodies and excel in their lives through their sport, career & family.

What I have gained from helping them access what they have come to search for is that their body is centre stage. They value it without the cost of time and money, simply a calling from their heart to keep well and supple, mobile and pain free.

Discovering their meaning behind their behaviour and decisions says a lot about them living in their bodies.

This is the secret to feeling young, vibrant and whole. Learn from the vehicle that carries you through life, and I as a physiotherapist I am honoured to be amongst their care team to help them fulfil their meaningful goals.

The presence of pain can be managed and even abolished over time with education, guided exposure and most importantly compassion. However the experience of pain can vary in intensity based on the context of its felt experience. With persistent pain, it’s more than having pain by your conscious side, it’s how it affects the person as a whole.

We all live in a self container of tension
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Most of us dissociated from Mother Earth’s support, we connect with the tiny devices in our hands that constantly interrupt our body’s voice. 🗣🗣

Our minds filled with what we see👀, we long for what we currently lack, touched by what others have lost, inspired by what we have just read or simply lost in other people’s posts.
Most of the time, we remain distracted by one tiny device, in the palm of our hands, in the forefront of our minds, drawing out all the resources of our conscious selves, we hold our breaths within the tension of our somatic boundaries.

Only if we grounded ourselves, just for a moment, tuned into our feet & felt the stable ground we stand on, where gravity and its match served by the centrifugal force of our spinning Earth meet, we realise that we run our lives always supported by our Mother Earth. We can begin to thaw our restrictions concealed in our throats, so we speak the truth with resonance, Lower our shoulders to allow the weight of our imagined world to slip away and lengthen our spine to float above our hips, we can all stand united in one world 🌏, the embodied kind, where peace ✌️is always present and wisdom forever abundant.
Our bodies are the home where our heart lies, where our minds rest and our spirit shines.

Why keep carrying the cognitive load, when the body says it has had enough.

If you watch 🔍🔎 your experiences, you will notice that they are continuously changing, meaning that the immediate conscious experience of you reading this has already changed as you moved your eyes 👁👁 from one word to the next, making meaning of what you read while the other parts of your experience such as sound, sight, taste, smell & touch change in the background.
———————————————
Your experiences have absolute existence of their own as this moment of consciousness is the result of what you were thinking about a moment ago. 💡💡
An interdependent relationship exists, as if each thought is preceding the next on the conveyer belt of consciousness.

So then....

As emotions 😕😫🤬😭 are feelings acquired at any one time, 🕰 they can remain stuck beneath your tissues. It is your choice to gradually relinquish them in the ever-changing stream of your consciousness, much like dropping a stone in a stream of fresh running water, watch it be swept away by the current, outside your immediate senses.
As emotions are purely dynamic, attaching to them goes against their innateness, such that they reverberate deep beneath the conscious level overstaying their welcome and orchestrating your way of being and doing.

It’s never to late to start slowly peeling away at an emotion of choice, with every changing breath, with every piercing thought, as you transition to becoming an interoceptive listener, embodied within your conscious self, seeing and feeling the moment to moment changes that make up your experience and begin watching the outside from a new lens 👓- from inside the safe haven of your container.🙏
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
You can attach to your emotions and claim ownership to see them change you over time or you can choose to gradually relinquish them and watch them change in the process of unfolding. 🎥🎞

Stanley Keleman once wrote; “Life makes shapes. These shapes are part of an organizing process that embodies emotions, thoughts, and experiences into structure.” Very Smart man- check him out 👉

➡️ You see, our senses deconstruct the world around us and our subconscious reconstructs it.
————————————-
We see and feel the world through our own filter using your deepest and implicit values as scaffolding for our biological build up. 🤯🤯

➡️ The moment to moment experiences before our eyes 👁👁 are brought to us by chemical and molecular interactions that take place inside our bodies.

➡️ I am of the view that we as bodies, are codependent with our minds, in such that the flow of mental activity, psychological experiences enlist the brain 🧠 through the currency of neural activity to become emergent and thus embodied.

➡️ In the pain game, although the physical and mental presentations are two different aspects, they are mutually irreducible and therefore must be addressed in all pain oriented therapies.

Do you include the mind in your bodywork? And if so, how? 👇👇

Rather than getting stuck in treating Anatomy, venture into treating the cognitive and interpretive capacity of the organism, where the thresholds of experience with inquisition are widened progressively around a nucleus of safety. 🤯🤯🤯...............................................
There is a difference between finding out WHY you have a problem and finding out how to overcome a problem.
/////:::::////////::::::///:::::///////::://
Let’s take Persistent Pain for example.

People can come and seek therapy to understand why they are in pain, in most instances knowing why pain exists in a person’s experience is no where near enough to help them manage it or even better, overcome it since the reason underlying their pain experience may be obvious or ambiguous.

Clinically, the latter is most prevalent, since most that seek a solution are confused with the time spent living in pain despite being exposed to many modalities and meeting many practitioners focused on finding the underlying driver of their plethora of symptoms. 🤷🏻🤦‍♂️

Frustrated from bearing no fruit from their endeavours, some abandon their efforts and deteriorate and some persist in looking outside the conventional diagnostic oriented scheme & continue to search for change in their experience.

THE SEEKERS HAVE THE WISDOM WITHIN THEM..

In solution oriented persistent pain therapy 👥👥, knowing “why” is not going to coax the brain 🧠 to change its interpretation of pain, you can never predict how information that is provided to a sufferer will be processed by the individual receiving it.
—————————————
It’s best to approach persistent and complex pain by discovering how to address the experience by interacting differently with it; the way they feel it and see it. 👁
Its definition may not matter as much as its owner’s attitude towards it. ...............................................
Changing the lens 👓on their pain can help change the person living inside it. 🙏🙏
