Psoriasis occurs due to immune system dysregulation in genetically predisposed individuals, resulting in inflammation and increased skin cell production.
While the exact cause is not fully understood, psoriasis is not contagious.
Common triggers that may worsen or activate symptoms include:
• Infections, particularly streptococcal infections
• Skin injury or trauma (including cuts, burns or scratches)
• Cold, dry weather conditions
• Smoking and alcohol consumption
• Certain medications
• Psychological stress
Identifying and managing triggers can be an important part of long-term control.
