📚💛 Our staff love these books — and not just because they’re fun to read!

At Talking Happy Kids, we’re always reaching for books that support early literacy development in meaningful ways. These favourites aren’t just cute stories — they’re carefully chosen because of the way they connect pictures and words to support children’s understanding, engagement, and language growth.

Whether it’s the way a story repeats key phrases, uses vivid illustrations to build vocabulary, or invites children to predict what happens next — each of these books offers something special to help little learners thrive.

Stay tuned as we share our go-to favourites in images! 📸✨

📚✨ What is literacy — and why does it matter so much for young children?

Literacy isn’t just about reading books — it’s about understanding, using, and expressing language in all forms. It includes:
🧠 Speaking and listening
✍️ Reading and writing
👀 Understanding symbols and letters
💬 Making meaning from stories and conversations

Children begin developing literacy skills long before they start school — through play, songs, conversations, and storytelling. These early experiences help shape how they’ll later learn to read, write, and communicate confidently in the classroom and beyond.

Strong literacy is the foundation for learning, connection, and independence — and it starts with language!

If you have questions or concerns about your child’s communication or pre-literacy skills, we’re here to help.

🔤✨ Let’s talk about phonological awareness — a BIG skill with a big impact on early literacy!

Phonological awareness is your child’s ability to hear and play with the sounds in words. It includes skills like:
👂 Hearing rhymes (cat, hat, mat)
🧠 Clapping out syllables (ba-na-na = 3 beats!)
🎵 Identifying beginning sounds (“Dog starts with /d/!”)

Why does it matter? Because phonological awareness is one of the strongest predictors of learning to read and spell. Children need to hear the sounds in words before they can match them to letters on a page. It is also a great team player! Did you know working on phonological awareness skills can help support children with speech sound disorders with their speech, reading, and writing skills? 📖

🎉 Simple ways to build these skills at home:
🎶 Sing nursery rhymes and songs with repeating sounds
👏 Clap out syllables in everyday words (“ta-ble”, “to-ma-to”)
📚 Read books that rhyme or play with sounds
❓ Play “I spy” with sounds (“I spy something that starts with /b/… ball!”)

Building these skills early helps set your child up for literacy success later on — and it can be lots of fun!

🧠💬 Did you know there are two main parts to language? Understanding this can help you better support your child’s development.

✨ Receptive language is how your child understands words, sentences, and instructions.
✨ Expressive language is how your child uses words to share ideas, needs, and thoughts.
✨ Overall, language is used a whole and that is how we teach it here at Talking Happy Kids.

Sometimes, kids might seem like they're doing fine because they talk a lot — but if they’re having trouble following directions, answering questions, or remembering what’s been said, they could be having receptive language difficulties.

These challenges can point to issues with processing, attention, or memory — and may impact learning down the track if left unsupported.

If you’ve noticed these signs, it’s never too early to seek help. Early support makes a huge difference!

🧠💬 Is your preschool or kindy-aged child finding it tricky to express themselves or follow instructions? It might be time to check in on their language development.

By ages 3–5, most children are:
✔️ Using full sentences to express ideas
✔️ Asking and answering questions
✔️ Following multi-step directions
✔️ Telling simple stories
✔️ Being understood by familiar and unfamiliar people

If your child is struggling in any of these areas — or if they’re often frustrated when communicating — they may benefit from language support. The good news? Early help leads to strong, confident communicators later on. 💪

Our team at Talking Happy Kids offers fun, play-based support that’s tailored to your child’s needs — and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

🧠💬 Looking to boost your child’s language development? It’s easier than you think — and it starts in your everyday routines!

You don’t need flashcards or fancy toys — just everyday moments, connection, and conversation. Talk through what you're doing during nappy changes, describe foods during mealtimes, or sing songs while in the bath or when getting dressed. 🍼🍎🧦

Use clear, simple language, repeat words often, and expand on what your child says. For example, if they say “car,” you might say “Big red car !” 🚗💨

These small, consistent moments of talking with your child help build their vocabulary, understanding, and confidence — all while strengthening your bond. 💛

🗣️ Did you know the way you chat with your child can make a BIG difference to their speech and language development?

Everyday conversations — even the simple ones during playtime, mealtimes or nappy changes — help build your child’s brain and teaches them how language works. 🧠💬 Slow down, get face-to-face, and talk with your child (not just to them). Give them time to respond, model new words, and most importantly — make it fun and engaging! ✨

Early, responsive interactions are one of the most powerful tools in supporting communication — especially for little ones who might be developing a bit differently or at their own pace.

🌟 What have we been up to lately? 🌟

We’ve been out in the community doing what we love — sharing knowledge and supporting those who support our kids every day! 💬✨

Recently, our team had the pleasure of providing professional development for the wonderful educators at Big Fat Smile Preschool. Together, we explored practical ways to boost the quality of speech and language support in early learning environments — because early communication matters, and educators play such a huge role! 🙌🎓

At Talking Happy Kids, we’re passionate about building strong, confident communicators — and that means partnering with schools, preschools, and families to create rich communication-learning environments from the ground up. 📚🧠💡

A huge thank you to Big Fat Smile Smile for having us! Your team’s openness, curiosity and commitment to supporting children’s communication is inspiring. 💙

Here’s to growing confident communicators — together! 🗣️🌈
