THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM... AND WHY IT MATTERS
You might have heard about the lymphatic system, but what does it actually do?
Your lymphatic system is a network of vessels, lymph nodes and lymphatic organs that work throughout your body, to:
~ Manage fluid
It collects excess fluid from your tissues and returns it to the bloodstream.
~ Support immunity
Lymph nodes filter lymph and play an important role in the body's immune response.
~ Absorb fats
Specialised lymphatic vessels in the digestive system help absorb dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins.
~ Support tissue health
The lymphatic system helps transport fluid, proteins, cells and other substances away from tissues.
SO WHERE DO MLD & DLT FIT IN?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised, gentle hands-on technique designed to encourage lymphatic fluid movement.
Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT) is a broader treatment approach used to manage lymphoedema. It can include:
* MLD or other appropriate manual techniques
* Compression
* Diaphragmatic Breathing
* Exercise and movement
* Skin care
* Education and self-management
These approaches work together to help reduce and control swelling, support tissue health and maintain improvements over time.
Your lymphatic system already has its own mechanisms for moving lymph: movement, muscle activity and normal breathing all contribute to lymph transport - but our lifestyles often result in lymphatic congestion, and the body can use the support of MLD.
MLD and DLT aren't about “detoxing” a healthy body or forcing toxins out of your tissues. They are therapeutic tools used when someone has, or is at risk of, lymphatic dysfunction.
Understanding the lymphatic system is the first step towards understanding lymphoedema — and why appropriate assessment and management matter.
