Think Therapy Is All Talk? Think Again.
A client came into session and said, "Life is lifeing, and 2026 is 2026ing." They weren't ready to talk. They were overwhelmed, exhausted, and resistant to the process.
So, instead of following my carefully planned session, we played Tic-Tac-Toe.
As the game unfolded, so did the conversation.
At one point, I asked, "What's happening on the board?"
They replied, "O is trapped. It's a catch-22."
I then asked, "How does this board represent where you are today?"
That simple question opened the door to a meaningful conversation about the challenges they were facing and helped us begin working through their anxiety.
As they left, they smiled and said, "When people ask what I did in therapy today, I'll tell them we played Tic-Tac-Toe."
The truth is, we did so much more.
Sometimes healing doesn't begin with talking. Sometimes it begins with play.
