Pleural effusion occurs when excess fluid accumulates in the pleural space, the thin area between the lungs and the chest wall. This condition is usually caused by an underlying medical problem that disrupts normal fluid balance.

One of the most common causes is congestive heart failure, which increases pressure in the pulmonary circulation and forces fluid into the pleural space. Infections such as pneumonia and tuberculosis can cause inflammation that leads to fluid or pus accumulation.

Cancer, particularly lung or breast cancer, may block fluid drainage or increase vascular permeability, resulting in malignant pleural effusion. Liver cirrhosis can allow fluid from the abdomen to move into the chest, while kidney disease can cause fluid overload and low protein levels that promote fluid leakage.

Other causes include pulmonary embolism, pancreatitis, autoimmune diseases, and chest trauma or surgery. Identifying the underlying cause is essential for proper diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of complications.
