Proper dental care for babies begins even before their first tooth appears to ensure healthy gums and strong primary teeth.
Before First Tooth (0–6 Months)
Gum Cleaning: Wipe your baby's gums twice daily using a soft, clean, damp cloth or silicone finger brush after feedings and before bedtime.
Avoid Bedtime Bottles: Do not put your baby to bed with a bottle of milk, formula, or juice to prevent early enamel decay.
First Tooth & Early Toddlerhood (6–24 Months)
Brushing Routine: Start brushing as soon as the first tooth erupts, twice a day (morning and night).
Toothpaste Amount: Use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (the size of a grain of rice) on a soft-bristled baby toothbrush.
Dental Visit: Schedule your baby's first dental appointment within 6 months of the first tooth's appearance or by their first birthday.
Toddler Care (2 Years & Up)
Toothpaste Amount: Increase to a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste once they learn how to spit it out.
Active Supervision: Brush their teeth for them or thoroughly supervise until age 6 to 8 to ensure all surfaces are cleaned.
Flossing: Begin flossing daily once two teeth touch each other.
Key Habits for Tooth Decay Prevention
Healthy Diet: Limit sugary drinks, sticky snacks, and prolonged use of sippy cups filled with juice or milk.
Weaning Off Bottles: Transition your baby from a bottle to an open or straw cup around 12 to 18 months.
