India has reported another rare case of amoebic meningoencephalitis, a deadly brain infection often called the “brain-eating amoeba” disease.

A 17-year-old boy from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, was diagnosed after swimming with friends at a tourist Village pool. The health department has shut down the pool and collected water samples for testing.

So far in 2025, Kerala has confirmed 67 cases of this infection, with 18 deaths.

The illness occurs when contaminated water enters the nose, allowing the amoeba to travel into the brain. It does not spread from person to person, but once inside the brain it causes severe swelling and damage. Early symptoms like fever, headache, and nausea can appear quickly and then worsen to confusion, seizures, and coma. Because it progresses so fast, survival is very rare.

The amoeba is found in warm freshwater and in swimming pools that are not properly cleaned. Experts say the best protection is prevention: avoid swimming in untreated ponds or poorly maintained pools, ensure pools are well chlorinated, and use boiled or distilled water for nasal rinses. Wearing nose clips or avoiding water entering the nose can also help reduce risk.

Though uncommon, amoebic meningoencephalitis is extremely dangerous if missed.
