STIFF -PERSON SYNDROME!
Recently internet is buzzing with the comeback of one of the Greatest voices in the world- Celine Dion! But did you know she has SPS!
A rare autoimmune neurological disorder characterized by progressive muscle stiffness and painful spasms.
🔹 Key features:
• Rigidity, especially of the trunk and proximal muscles.
• Painful spasms triggered by sudden noise, touch, movement or emotional stress.
* Taut facial expression.
* Difficultly breathing.
* Fracture of bones and dislocation by sudden painful spasm!
* Hyperlordosis and falls may occur
* Consciousness is usually preserved during spasms.
# Diagnosis:
• Anti-GAD65 antibody — commonly associated
• EMG: continuous motor unit activity at rest
# Treatment:
• Diazepam / baclofen for symptomatic control
• IVIG is an important immunotherapy option
• Other immunotherapies may be used in refractory case.
