NASA's Artemis III mission will be a crewed flight in Earth orbit that will test rendezvous and docking capabilities between the agency’s Orion spacecraft and commercial landers from Blue Origin and SpaceX.

Instead of using the interim cryogenic propulsion stage as the upper stage of the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket for this mission, NASA will use a “spacer,” a representation of the mass and overall dimensions of an upper stage but without propulsive capabilities.

Design and fabrication activities for the spacer are progressing rapidly at . Material for the barrel section and the upper and lower rings is currently being machined at our center in preparation for upcoming welding operations.

Meet K2 18 b, one of the most intriguing worlds ever found beyond our solar system. It orbits a red dwarf star about 120 light years from Earth and lies in its star’s habitable zone, the region where temperatures could allow liquid water under the right conditions.

K2 18 b is not an Earth twin. It is a sub Neptune or super Earth sized planet with a radius about 2.37 times Earth’s and a mass about 8.92 times Earth’s, completing one orbit every 32.9 days.

What makes it so exciting is its atmosphere. JWST observations have revealed methane and carbon dioxide, making K2 18 b the first habitable zone exoplanet where carbon bearing molecules were detected in the atmosphere.

Some researchers think it could be a “Hycean” world, meaning a planet with a hydrogen rich atmosphere and possibly a vast ocean beneath it. But that idea is still being tested, and scientists have not confirmed that K2 18 b is truly habitable or completely covered in oceans.
