New research supporting orthobiologic approaches to equine joint disease 🔬

A recently published pilot study in *Veterinary Sciences* investigated the use of an α-2-macroglobulin-enriched plasma-derived orthobiologic preparation in sport horses with chronic degenerative joint disease.

Ten sport horses received a single intra-articular administration and were followed for up to 180 days. The results showed meaningful improvements in lameness scores, flexion test response, and joint effusion — alongside reductions in key synovial biomarkers associated with inflammation and cartilage breakdown, including pro-inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases.

While the study is exploratory in nature, it adds to the growing body of evidence supporting protease-targeted, biologically-driven approaches to joint disease management — and supports the case for further randomised controlled research in this space.

🔬 Newly published in the Equine Veterinary Journal!

Allogeneic orthobiologic therapies such as PRP and A2MG are increasingly used to treat joint and tendon disorders in horses. But what exactly is their composition, and are repeated intra-articular injections truly safe?

In this new study, researchers from INTIBIO and Ghent University investigated both the composition and the immunological safety of repeated allogeneic injections. The findings provide valuable insights for veterinarians and horse owners who rely on regenerative therapies.

📣 Meet the Team: Sarah Broeckx 📣

Say hello to Sarah Broeckx, a powerhouse of expertise, passion, and dedication! 🐎👩‍⚕️

Born in 1987, Sarah has been a passionate dressage rider her entire life. Her love for horses led her to pursue a career in veterinary sciences, graduating from the University of Ghent in 2010 and earning a PhD shortly after. 🏅

With over a decade of experience in the field, Sarah co-founded the stem cell company GST, where she spent 10 years as Head of Quality, establishing certified GMP, GLP, GDP, and GCP systems. After GST's acquisition by pharmaceutical giant Boehringer Ingelheim, she further honed her skills as QA Site Head in Belgium and Associate Director of QA in Athens, Georgia, USA. 🌍

In 2019, Sarah co-founded Via Nova Equine Hospital alongside her husband, Jan Spaas, and veterinarian Marc Suls, creating a cutting-edge space for equine care. Today, Sarah leads INTIBIO’s Quality Programs with her trademark precision and drive.

When she’s not making waves in veterinary science, Sarah cherishes time with her husband and their two daughters, balancing her impressive career with the joy of family life. 💕

📣 Meet the Team: Jan Spaas 📣

Meet Jan Spaas, a passionate equestrian and accomplished veterinary scientist. Born in 1986, Jan's journey began in the world of competitive show jumping, where he earned two bronze medals at the European Championships as a junior and young rider.

He graduated as a veterinarian from the University of Ghent in 2010, where he also earned a PhD in veterinary sciences. Today, Jan continues his connection with the university as a visiting professor, sharing his expertise and knowledge with future generations.

Jan's entrepreneurial spirit led him to serve as the CEO of the stem cell company GST for a decade, during which he successfully introduced two medicinal products based on stem cell therapy to the European market. In 2020, GST was acquired by Boehringer Ingelheim, where Jan later worked as Global Head of Research for the veterinary division, including overseeing drug development in Athens, Georgia, and Germany.

He is also the co-founder of the horse clinic Via Nova, established alongside his wife Sarah Broeckx and veterinarian Marc Suls. Via Nova was acquired by Altano in 2022, marking another milestone in his career.

Currently, Jan leads the R&D programs at Intibio and remains an active and passionate board member in several companies. Outside of his professional life, he cherishes spending time with his wife and two daughters.

With a career that bridges groundbreaking science and a love for animals, Jan embodies dedication and innovation in veterinary medicine. 🐴✨
