Medical scenario training with as part of today’s IWI Response class for the DNRC Helena Unit. They did an amazing job implementing the IWI, quickly working together as a team to help save the life of an injured firefighter.

Day 1 of a 2-day IWI Response class for the DNRC’s Helena Unit and Last Chance Helitack’s wildland firefighting crews. These photos are of Heartsaver Total and providing LZ training. Day 2 (tomorrow) will start with focusing on working through the 8-Line, practicing patient assessment and treatment, and various patient movement techniques before moving on to an IWI scenario, where students will implement their training in a full, beginning-to-end real-time scenario from recognition and response to contacting Dispatch to coordinate working with air ambulance response from LifeFlight Network.

Thus far, four lives have been saved by students of mine who had the opportunity to implement the skills they learned in class. That is why I do what I do. They report a calm assurance given the situation, being confident in their abilities, know what they can do and what they need to do to get more advanced help to the patient. I am so proud of these Frontline Responders. High-fidelity training truly makes a real difference. Start training, and keep training.

I recently trained with the Montana General Services Division (GSD) to prepare for a workplace injury at their carpenter shop. The scenario included using the SMARCH algorithm and coordinating a response from St. Peter’s Ambulance Service to hand off patient care for transport. GSD has done an amazing job investing in their people to provide valuable life skills which apply to while extending beyond the workplace. Keep pushing your training!

Civilian bystanders are the Frontline Responders in emergencies, yet they typically spend the 10-15 minutes waiting for Law Enforcement, Fire, and EMS simply wringing their hands.
