23 fibroids.
21 removed.
2 left behind.
This raises an important question: what happens when you're told those last two are “too small to worry about”?
I’m genuinely happy that Rachel found a path that worked for her, and I’m grateful that she shared her story.
However, the first thing that concerns me is that the initial recommendation she received from her doctor was for a hysterectomy.
For many women, especially Black women, fibroids can come with a very different treatment conversation. We know that there are significant disparities in who gets offered hysterectomy and how quickly. As a U.S. Board-certified specialist from the Bahamas and the Caribbean, I take issue with that.
This is exactly why I believe women deserve to know all of their options before making a decision that changes their body forever.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatment exclusively performed by Interventional Radiologists that allows us to treat fibroids at their blood supply source through a tiny 2 mm incision.
Rather than choosing which fibroids to remove surgically, UFE allows us to treat the entire blood supply feeding the fibroids, killing then all.
My goal isn't to tell you which treatment is right for you.
It's to make sure you know there may be more than one option.
Because you can't choose an option you were never told the whole truth about.
If you've been told hysterectomy is your only option, ask one more question:
“What are all of my treatment options?”
That question matters.
