Druk Sokchop Wilderness First Aid for Guides

The Druk Sokchop Program completed a three-day Wilderness First Aid training for the Trans Bhutan Trail (TBT) guides. The guides now have key life-saving skills for remote areas where adequate and required resources are not available to attend to their guest during medical emergencies. They learned everything from basic life support to treating injuries, emergency medical conditions, and environmental hazards, along with making decisions about the need for, and urgency of, evacuation/referral.

Strengthening Lifesaving Skills in Bhutan: Druk Sokchop (DS) Bhutan Advanced Life Support (BALS) Training

The DS-Bhutan Advanced Life Support (BALS) program, the Bhutanese version of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), marks another important step toward building a sustainable national resuscitation training system tailored to our healthcare needs.

The BALS Instructor Training was conducted from June 17–19 and July 6–7, 2026, successfully training 16 instructors, including promising senior residents and specialist consultants from various clinical backgrounds. Additionally, 24 BALS providers, comprising interns, first-year residents, and consultants, were trained in this lifesaving course.

This initiative will expand the pool of trained instructors and providers across Bhutan, ensuring wider access to standardized resuscitation education and strengthening our capacity to save lives during critical emergencies.

Heartfelt appreciation to the Intern Orientation Program for incorporating BALS training into the orientation curriculum, allowing our young doctors to gain these essential lifesaving skills from the beginning of their medical journey.

Together, we continue to build a stronger and safer healthcare system for Bhutan.

On June 4th and 5th, 2026, the DrukSokchop program conducted a two-day First Aid at Work training for National Housing Development Corporation Limited (NHDCL) staff. The session equipped regional office personnel with the essential skills needed to handle work-related injuries and medical emergencies.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support Guideline Update.

The ACLS Guideline Updates 2025 online session was successfully held on June 3, 2026 from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM (BST) via Zoom, with participation from more than 70 healthcare professionals across Bhutan. Organized by Druk Sokchop Bhutan Advanced Life Support (DS-BALS) in collaboration with the Thai Resuscitation Council (TRC), the event marked the first partnership between the two organizations aimed at strengthening resuscitation education in Bhutan.

The session was formally opened by Dr. Kuenzang Chhezom, Registrar of the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan, in her capacity as Chair of Druk Sokchop courses. Heartfelt gratitude is extended to the President of TRC and the Chair of Druk Sokchop for their valuable support and collaboration, which made this session possible.

Special thanks are extended to Dr. Wisuit Katekao, Board Member of the Thai Resuscitation Council, for delivering the session. The presentation highlighted key ACLS guideline updates, including high-quality CPR, defibrillation strategies, POCUS integration in resuscitation, updated management of tachycardia and bradycardia, cardioversion algorithms, and post–cardiac arrest care.

The enthusiastic participation and strong engagement from attendees greatly contributed to the success of the program and ongoing efforts to enhance emergency cardiovascular care and resuscitation training in Bhutan.

The program was an initiative of Dr. Mahesh Gurung, Cardiologist JDWNRH, the master trainer and course leader of DS -BALS.

Druk Sokchop First Aid and Druk Sokchop Wilderness First Aid for guides of De-suung Skilling Programme

We’re thrilled to share that 22 guides from the De-suung Skilling Programme completed a three-day intensive training in General First Aid and Wilderness First Aid, delivered by Druk Sokchop First Aid Team.
The sessions covered essential skills for everyday emergencies and remote outdoor settings, including CPR for adults, children, and infants, scene safety, bleeding control, wound care, and splinting, and common medical events.

In the wilderness module, participants learned how to assess remote incidents, stabilize patients with improvised splints, plan evacuation and communication in challenging environments, heat/cold illness, and environmental hazards. Hands-on practice with CPR, wound care, splinting, and simulated remote evacuations helped build confidence and decisiveness under pressure. A big thank-you to the participants and trainers, and to the De-suung Skilling Programme for prioritizing safety and readiness.

The Druk Sokchop Program (KGUMSB) successfully conducted a comprehensive two-day General First Aid training for the staff of Save the Children Bhutan.
While their daily mission focuses on advocating for children's rights and well-being, these professionals are now fully equipped with the life-saving skills necessary to respond to any emergency.
