Being a caregiver is meaningful work, but it does come with real *physical, emotional, and financial risks*. Knowing them helps you protect yourself and the person you’re caring for.

*1. Physical Risks & Dangers*
- *Injuries from lifting/transferring*: Back strain, shoulder injuries, and falls are common when helping someone move from bed to chair, bathe, or use the toilet.
- *Sleep deprivation*: Night-time care, medications, and emergencies can lead to exhaustion, which increases risk of accidents.
- *Exposure to illness*: You’re around germs, wounds, incontinence, and sometimes contagious conditions. Cuts and needle-sticks are also a risk.
- *Violence or aggression*: Some patients with dementia, brain injury, or mental illness may become confused, hit, bite, or yell.
- *Home hazards*: Clutter, poor lighting, and medical equipment can cause you to trip or fall.
