This is the look of absolute disgust we got from Loki when he learned that we forgot about Black Cat Appreciation day earlier this week. He's contemplating his revenge, and has narrowed it down to either pooping in someone's shoes or vomiting on something. Either way, he's mad and we'll have to clean something up. Sorry, Loki! We love and appreciate you every day (except apparently on August 17th though 😱)

💨AIR QUALITY AND PETS💨

With the surrounding wildfires, smoky air has become a daily occurrence. Pets can be just as effected as their humans to poor air quality, and can greatly benefit from a few simple actions.

💨 Keep windows closed and run air filters inside.
💨 Keep outdoor bathroom breaks brief - set up indoor litter boxes for kitties that spend time outside and keep them indoors as much as possible.
💨 Avoid extensive or intense outdoor exercise.
💨 Avoid exposing birds to smoky air as they are susceptible to lung damage.

Signs of too much exposure to smoky air quality include:

💨 Breathing difficulties
💨 Coughing or gagging
💨 Asthma-like symptoms
💨 Eye irritation and/or watering

If you have questions or concerns for your pet's exposure to smoky air conditions, please give us a call at 604-796-9555 or 604-869-9555.

🔎July is National Pet Loss Prevention Month🔎

July is one of the busiest month for a lot of shelters - from celebrations with fireworks to traveling during the summer, this is a common time of year for pets to find themselves in unfamiliar environments. Taking proactive steps to ensure your pet has proper identification and a secure environment is essential to their safe return.

Tips for pet loss prevention include:
🐾 Making sure microchip information and ID tags are up to date
🐾Consider getting an identification tattoo done in your pets ear during their spay or neuter surgery
🐾 Ensure that your yard is secure
🐾 Use well fitting collars, harnesses and leashes
🐾 Create a safe, quiet space for your pet during loud or frightening events

What to do if your pet goes missing:
🐾 Search the immediate area including bushes or sheds
🐾 Contact local vet clinics, shelters and animal control offices
🐾 Check social media sites including local community or lost pets pages

If you would like more information on pet identification options available, please give us a call at either our Agassiz location at 604-796-9555 or in our Hope location at 604-869-9555.

🌡HOT PAWS ALERT🌡

Sunny weather means we're spending more time outdoors being active, but it is not always the best for our pets. We don't always realize how much pavement heats up on a hot summer day, and unfortunately this can cause blisters and burns on our pets paw pads. If the pavement or sand is too hot for us to walk on barefoot, it is too hot for paws!

Some helpful tips to avoid injury to sensitive paws include:

🐾Walk during cooler times such as early morning or later in the evening
🐾If mid-day walks are needed, keep them as short and in the shade if possible
🐾Stay away from hot surfaces like pavement or sand; try grassy or dirt areas
🐾Try using pet shoes or booties - these are they best at protecting paws but make take some getting used to
🐾Check your pets paws after walks for cracks or abrasions

How to tell if a paw pad is suffering from heat damage:

🐾If your pet is showing any signs of pain or discomfort to their feet
🐾If there is visible damage such as colour change, blisters or open sores

If your pet has burn damage to their paws, get them to a cool area immediately and try not to let them lick their feet. Consult your veterinarian as soon as possible to assess the wounds and have them treated appropriately so they can get relief.

If you are concerned that your pet may have burnt their feet, give us a call either at our Agassiz location at 604-796-9555 or in our Hope location at 604-869-9555.

❤Puppy Love❤

This little love bug (appropriately named Love) was in to see us this morning, and we honestly can't think of a better way to start the day! She was the best girl and so brave for her exam. Thanks for the snuggles, Love!

💦July is National Pet Hydration Month💦

The weather is heating up, so what better time to talk about hydration! Dehydration can cause serious health risks for our pets, and is a very common cause of vet visits during the hotter months.

Some handy tips to keep pets hydrated during the warm weather include:

💦Have fresh, cool water available at all times
💦Try a water fountain to entice drinking
💦Increase moisture content in food by adding water to meals
💦Make sure to pack water and a portable dish while traveling

Signs of dehydration include:
💦Vomiting and/or diarrhea
💦Lethargic or drowsy behaviour
💦Dry nose/mouth/sticky gums
💦Excessive panting
💦Loss of appetite

If you are concerned that your pet is dehydrated, give us a call at either our Agassiz location at 604-796-9555 or in our Hope location at 604-869-9555.
